I keep hearing about gun season and only being able to use a gun during certain times of the year, I didnt see it in the reg, chances are I just missed it, can someone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks Guys

Off subject just a little, but here in Quebec, hard copies no longer exist as of this year, you need to download the regs online. So if your not hooked up to the net, yer out of luck.

Any other provinces doing this???

Jeez I hope not. I always, always, always have a copy with me when hunting. Even though I'm 50 and have hunted since I could wipe myself (and read the regs religiously) every decade or so I come across something I want to confirm in the regs.

Crap, next I'm going to have to get a ipod or whizdoodle money waster or whatever I suppose.....ya, that's gonna happen

This has to be a joke thread! Your kidding me right!!! If not, I MUST suggest you get a mentor to help you out, before you get yourself in trouble. The regs MUST be read and understood before you start firing off shots at any animals, whether firearms of archery!!! I'm sure...if you took the firearms and hunting course...they would have stressed that. If you need more info, I'm in Ontario...PM me and I hope I can answer some of your questions to try to point you in the right direction. At least you had the decentsy to ask for help, I give you credit for that, and hope you can get the proper direction.

Thats why Im here asking a simple question I found the open gun season when I downloaded the 2010 hunting regs, Im sure you all had questions when you started hunting.

I see the part of the regs that says you can only hunt small game with a 22 when your in an open gun season for deer and such but I dont see any part that list an open gun season for small game, so that means I can use a gun to hunt small game year round? If someone could answer this or point me in the right direction.

And I am in ontario

Im sure you all had questions when you started hunting.

Yep and you are right to ask questions. The best way to start understanding the regs is to break them down. Don't look at the whole or you will go nuts.
Start with the basics
What do I want to hunt and where do I want to hunt?
In Quebec the province is broken down into different zones and I am sure each province does this.
So say you want to hunt deer in the Hamilton area. First find out what zone Hamilton is in. Then look for the dates deer can be hunted in that zone.
Next you want to find out what calibers can be used for the type of game you plan on hunting. Usually the regs will list a minimum caliber requirement.
After that you must look for special rules that pertain to your zone. As an example, it could state that, for the coming season in your zone, "hunting north of the CN tracks between highways 104 and 222 is prohibited due to blah blah blah"

Well I hope you get the picture, and I hope this helps. Welcome to the ranks and ask all the questions you want. We all started at some point and we all needed a helping hand.

I am getting the hang of understanding where you can hunt with what and when, the only thing I cant seem to find in the regs is does small game have an open gun season or can you use a 22 year round?

You can hunt small game year rd. in Ont.,with your .22 but, you have to know what animals this means, crows, groundhogs, blackbirds, and some others but does not include game birds or animals such as Rabbits, grouse, quail, ducks, geese, etc,,,,,or protected species like: seagulls, Ravens, doves, swans...this is just a sample and there are many more species on all 3 lists, name a species and someone on here myself included can tell you whether to fire or put the safety back on!
My understanding is that this applies to S. Ont. only.

No I understand that animals like foxes and such have an open season just wanted to know if small game could be hunted with a 22 as these animals dont have a gun season in the regs nor any conditions on hunting them.

My first several times out will be with people that have been hunting their whole lives to help me out, thanks guys.

"...does small game have a gun season..." Have you done your Hunter's Safety Course yet?
Click on this on Wendell's link and read the whole thing. "download all sections listed above, as one file."
"...animals like foxes..." No closed season for fox in most of Ontario. Yes you can use a .22 for fox, but you'll be handicapped.

I understand the open and closed seasons for the different animals but unlike the animals like bear and such that have a gun season listed in the regs I dont see this for any of the small game animals. Instead of asking repeating questions over and over about if I my license and such can someone just help point me in the right direction, perhaps a page number not just read the regs, I have read them and dont see it or dont understand the small game section fully.

"small game" refers to things like grouse and rabbits (amongst others), which most certainly do have open/closed seasons. Check the link I posted, it has the dates you are looking for.

I think what you are referring to is things like blackbirds and groundhogs, which you require a small game license to hunt, but are not considered a game animal.
