There are two main gun shops in winnipeg; SIR and a branch of Wholesale sports. SIR has a few handguns, no 1911's and most likely no 1911 parts. They usually have a couple of .22's and some large caliber revolvers. There might be something other than Taurus guns on consignment though. I don't believe that the local wholesale stocks handguns.
If you're in town and have the time then SIR is probably worth it. The gun counter is pretty large, albeit seriosly lacking in handguns, and the whole store is rather large. It's no Cabelas but it's still a respectable size. The staff are generally hit and miss with service, sometimes great sometimes not so great.
If you're heading out to the western edge of the province by Brandon then give Wolverine supplies a call. I'm not sure if they do regular store hours but rumor has it that it's worth the drive (couple hours at least?? from Winnipeg). That's more of a whole-day-trip from Winnipeg but if you're comming in from Sask then it might be on your way.
I would agree with Happydude in regards to pistols. If wanting anything I would say he is the man to talk to. I would give him a call. If you can go there it is worth the trip as well. He has a lot of neet stuff out there.
You are going to have to order in 1911 parts, either on your own or through a dealor. I'm not aware of any store that carries hardcore handgun accessories. There are certainly dealors in Winnipeg that show up at the gunshows with parts, but I'm not aware of any that have a store front. I useed to buy parts from Bill Savage, like ambi-safety, spares mag and the like.
Anyone know if the Firing Line still has a retail section?
The Firing Line no longer sells guns or parts as it is a range only. However, there are a couple of people who post adds to sell equipment on the bulliten board.
In regards to SIR, I was there a few days ago and they have some 6" S&W Victory Models, (I think a couple of .357/.38's too), a bunch of prohibs (a beautiful browning 1910, a Beretta 1934, etc), and a few Beretta 92's.
Just saw Sheldon tonight at the firing line. He had four guns there to sell. You can reach him at IMI (integrating messaging). It's in the book. He owns a paging and messaging company too. Tell him the other Sheldon sent you!
+1 for Sheldon. I bought my 226 from him. Transfer was done in 2 days after the cash exchange. It was mailed out the next week. Excellent communication and service.
Hoddie.
