Gun Store Dude,,,WTF?

Hey,

I was at the local outdoors store this evening buying some last minute supplies for my camping trip this weekend. Thought I'd take a look at what they had to use as a camp/bear gun. I was searching for a H&R Tamer all week but no one in Canada has any in stock. Anyway....
I see they have a Boito hiker .410, 12" shotgun. I ask to take a look at it and mention that I would want to load it with slugs. The salesman proceeds to tell me how if I shot slugs out of such a short barrel that I would blow up the gun. :rolleyes:
Now, I'm no expert, but I can't for the life of me figure out how that would be even remotely possible. I can see how muzzle velocity would be diminished shooting out of a shorter barrel, but that's it.

NO SALE!

I guess I'm taking my TOZ 20ga bolt action with me. It's a little long for my purposes, but it's pretty light weight. I might even get to shoot some small game if something crosses my path. A little rabbit or pheasant will be a great treat. :)
 
.410 slugs, why not?
Do you think if I shoot a sub-200lb black bear in the nose with a .410 slug that he'll still be hungry? :)
Not my first choice, but I was curious about the gun as I had never seen that model before. I'll be ordering a Tamer for my next trip.

BTW, this is not a bear defense thread, it's an idiot salesman thread.
 
Giving out this kind of advice (The store guy I mean), one sort of wonders what kind of liability it carries.
I can see it now....Man buys (insert inappropriate caliber here) gun on advice of store clerk. Man wounds bear, and is subsequently eaten. Widow sues store.....
 
The salesman is obviously much more concerned with the liability attached to selling a customer a gun and ammunition that are obviously going to explode.:eek:
 
I had a Boito 12" 410, and I have shot slugs through it and it DID blow up.



Ok.... the last satement was a lie, it worked absolutely fine and my plan was to actually use it as a bear hunting gun, thought it would be cool to shoot one at close range with it....Well...

I did a test and fired a 410 slug into a paperback book at 20 yds. I got about 100 pages penetration and the slug turned into lead flakes. Absolutely useless in my opinion. You would in fact be better off with a .22.
 
how short is that barrel - :eek:
If you can shoot 45s then you can shoot slugs

Can you tell us the name of the store ? Is it the one on boul Ste-rose?
 
Both my son and I have Backpackers and regularly shoot slugs and so far they haven't blown up. :confused:
He does use his for scaring bears off instead of using bear bangers.
I use mine as an effective bear defence gun - I point it at the bear and while it rolls on the ground laughing at me, I get the hell outta there. Works every time. :D
