GunDogs

I was lucky with my dogs and gun shyness, I just took them hunting, fired a few rounds and they never even noticed.
NOW I can't even pick up a gun in the house without them getting all excited, if I am checking out a new gun, they will look in the directioni am pointing it and get all excited. If I don't "shoot" anything in my living room, they start barking.

I have a 1.5 year old Lab and a 6 year old Lab mix. They are both excellent dogs when you consider the training (or lack of) that they had.

Rohann, you ask very good questions and it is VERY important to do a TON of homework before you pick a breed and then a kennel. We tried a few rescues and they had major issues, so we went to a good breeder of hunting Brittany Spaniels (they point birds).
My dog is SO smart, best dog I've ever owned (and I have had quite a few).
Whatever breed you decide on, make triple sure of the breeder before you put any $$ down.
Here's an excellent web chat for such questions/ homework...

Check it out....Very interesting.

Rohann, you might want to look up the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association - www.navhda.org They promote the training and breeding of the versatile hunting dog breeds.

Unlike more specialized retrievers, hounds or pointers, the versatile breeds were developed in Europe for the one-dog hunter, and they can do each of their hunting tasks almost as well as the specialists. They are good at pointing upland birds, tracking, and retrieving on land and in water. They all have a temperment compatible with family living.

There are several NAVHDA chapters across Canada, the closest to you is in Alberta. Our Saskatchewan chapter has been active for about 12 years. We have members with Brittanys, Munsterlanders, Wirehairs, Weimaraners, Pudelpointers, Vislas, German Shorthairs, Spinones, and several others. It's very educational to come out to a club training day or watch a test.

If I was only hunting waterfowl, I'd get a lab or chesapeake. If I only hunted sharptails, I'd get an english pointer. If I only hunted rabbits, I'd get a beagle. But my Pudelpointer ( or any other versatile breed) can do it all, pretty well.
