caught this buck cruising a trail about 50 yrds away from my stand, he dissapeared and then reappered 2 seconds later at 65 yrds away as he was really moving down a trail on a gradual slope to my right. I had to swing really far to my right to catch him before he dissapeared for good. I had to wait until he was in the clear before I snaked a bullt between two birch trees. He dropped like a sack of hammers without a even a kick.
I shot him with an M700 in 30-06 that I bought from 303Carbine, 2 yrs ago.

we picked him up in the bucket of our backhoe and then brought him back to the shack to be gutted. I found the bullet against the far side of the hide nicely mushroomed

I have never smelt a buck that stunk as much as this guy, his forehead was completely soaked from rubbing up against trees, and you could smell the scent of bark on him.

it was a fun season, I shot a doe about 2-3 weeks ago in one of our feilds out of my ameristep pop-up, and was glad to connect with some antler.

deer season is over for me, so next is a trip to quebec for caribou

Ontario?? I'm in Ontario and I don't think I've ever even seen a buck like that, much less shot one! When I saw the picture I immediately thought Saskatchewan or other another point west. Ontario???

Congratulations on a super deer.

theres a lot of big bucks in ontario but because of the high population of hunters in sw you really have to wait for the big guys to make a mistake. ill post a pic of the big 10 point my dad shot a few years ago sometime. heres a pic of a buck that someone next to the property we hunt shot and didnt recover:rolleyes:  only time any of us saw him was on the trail cam at night. inside spread was 21" i believe....still have the rack but its in the garage.

the big one my dad shot was in the peak of the rut and we guessed this one was shot in the rut as well. i believe the rut has begun here in ontario so nows a good time to get out and get one;)

anyways back to the post....

i dont know alot about ballistics and such but i would have thought that the bullet would have passed through at such a short range. anyone have any ideas why it didnt?

bullet

My guess on why the bullet didn't pass through the deer is,the deer is a good size and the factory loading may be not as warm as the loadings that the local gunnutz would load.:D
Either way it's a very nice buck, good on ya Grouse, cheers from the Island:cool:
PS, post a pic of the bullet when you get a chance.!!!
