My grandpa has a prohibited handgun and he has decided to sell it. I have wanted this handgun since I was little but being a prohib I couldn't. I had forgot about it and then he phoned today telling me he was selling it.

Its a Smith and Wesson Model 39-2 in better than excellent condition (less than 1 box fired maybe less than 3 magazines fired through the gun. When he got it registered it was 4mm too short (or less he couldn't remember)

Can I get a new barrel installed and have the old one destroyed and get it reclassified as a restricted so I could buy it? If I can do that were do I source a barrel? If that isn't going to work, do I have any options or am I SOL and this gun is gone for good from our family?

If there is no legal way for me to do this what is a handgun like this worth? He is sending me photo's and I will post them tomorrow. I don't want him to be taken advantage of cause he has no idea of a value.

Thanks

Barsto make S&W barrels, but not often. Problem is, the barrel and gunsmithing involved would likely be equal to the value of the gun.

Try talking to Barry at Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC. He does a lot of this sort of work and he is an expert gunsmith.

Got a couple pm's to phone him aswell so I will be phoning him tommorrow thanks to all that helped (thread and pm's) Hopefully it works out.

I was in a very similar situation as this a while back. It wasn't a relatives gun, but it was the same identical gun (they are ###y beasts aren't they?). Numrich doesn't even have the barrels in stock. So that isn't even a close option. It is the same barrel as 5 or 6 other S&W models. The only way is to get a new barrel made for it. It will cost you some money but at least the gun will still be in your family. It will also not look stupid with a longer barrel because it's off by only a couple of mm's at most. I believe the price at the time was $300.

I don't know if you can legally get the gun, but of course if you can, that would be best. Barry is in the process of making a "restricted" barrel for a Model 39 for me now. He's very good technically, and very good personally. But expect to wait several months. I don't know who else in Canada does these. and Barry's always backed up. Your grandfather can send the gun to Barry, Barry can fit the new barrel and re-register the gun as restricted, and your grandfather can then transfer the gun to you. Barry will ship to you.
