Guns of the Game Wardens

Simply noting a trend of paramilitarization of police and peace officers. It's here and abroad. Make me feel safer? Certainly not. Not sure I much care for the trend.

I must say I tend to agree with you.
A conservation officer in Alberta or BC should have a rifle in .35 Whelen versus any AR carbine.
But that's just me. Animal control officers armed!?
Maybe a 357. Actually that's perfect in thier holster. The big gauge back of the truck.

Animal Control Officers? That's what you think their job is?

Well Steve, that's kind of what we do isn't it! Lol. Maybe these guys should spend a little time with these professions to really understand what's going on in society these days. I suspect then they will have a different opinion of the tools of the trade.

Here in Manitoba I remember an old RMNP park warden telling of being issued a winchester pre 64 model 70 in 30/06 for an elk cull. I believe he had that rifle until he retired in the late sixties. His son replaced the park issue with a scoped pre 64 when he retired. The old gent loved his model 70s. and thought there was nothing finer in a rifle. I was told the cull was somewhere around 2,000 animals in 1958.

Has there been actually any 'fire fights' in the bush, ;) as per why do they need 'Semi-auto / Military Grade Carbines? I get, if to dispatch an aggressive / nuisance or injured Bear or large game, a nice 12 gauge pump or bolt action .308 should suffice..No?
Why do they need all that fire power? Has there been history of violent poachers in the bush or something?

*quick Google search, I see one shooting instance 50 years back, & one in 2004. So, 2.

are you a LIBERAL - Just wondering that with those questions ! what does it matter ?? as they all shoot BULLETS ! or PELLETS !(projectiles ) :p LOL RJ

In a lot of jurisdictions the game wardens back up local law enforcement. I don’t care what they carry for for firearms as long it’s keeps themselves and others safe when the time comes. Both my folks are police and in remote areas the only help coming could be the local conservation officer. Don’t judge what they require until you sign up and do the job. As they say “better to be looking at at then looking for it” when things go south.

It doesn't really matter how armed the CO's get... unless for some reason you are looking at the muzzle... they are law enforcement after all.

Manitoba issues
Sig P226 DAK 9mm
Remington 870 (20” rifle sighted)
Remington 700 .308
Marlin XT22 (both LR and magnum in use)
We are looking at the issuing of AR10 .308s but haven’t got the roll out finalized yet.

Thanks, this is more specific to what I was curious about, although I assumed 40 S&W.

What about ammo? Are there specs and contracts or do they just send someone to Canadian Tire or Bass Pro?

We used to issue .40 Glocks but switched to 9mm Sigs when the Glocks wore out.
The ammunition is usually 124gr Federal HST but I have seen Hornady 124gr +P XTP issued in the past.
Availability of ammunition affects agencies too.

Shotgun slugs are full power. Federal was common but now Score out of MB is more common. Unfortunately Score uses a Thug slug in their loading and the slug fragments violently. Often multiple exit wounds on small black bears.
I would much prefer low recoil slugs that held together on impact.

I should clarify I’m not an officer, but a wildfire manager.
I work very closely with the officers though.
