Guns on an ATV?

Wouldn't a GUNBOOT be considered a trunk, if locked to the mounting bracket, to meet the vehicle requirements?

When I used to run my ATV thru a short section of Manning Park here in BC I would put trigger locks onto the rifles and put the rear cover on the gun cases and lock them as well.

As soon as I left the park limits I would unlock everything.

I don't know if that helps with the discussion of whether a gun boot is considered a "trunk" for leaving firearms in unattended.

I'm keenly looking at the Kolpin boots... Anyone having anything good/bad to say about them? I'm not looking for anything fancy. I'm also thinking of just getting those gear claw things that you can mount on your front/rear rack. Seems it'd be better for quicker access in the event of a grouse/deer/whatever encounter. Bad side would be that your gun would be getting smashed by whatever you're driving through....

Some guys load up their Mule for 3-gun... WHy not an ATV..? :)

My point is that in National parks firearms are to be stored safely and this was considered safe storage by the CO's I know...

Does it address the issue being discussed?

Maybe maybe not.

Unless you stuff the bottom of the barrel channel until the barrel bottoms in the boot before the scope does, you can easily damage a scope,or at least throw the zero off.

Well I guess since your splitting hairs, that could also apply if you were sitting on the atv but looking the other way when someone removed your gun before you could prevent it

If you are sitting on the atv,the atv is not "unattended".

No, but I'm sure they'd still find a bunch of stuff to charge you with if someone crept up on you and took your gun from "under your nose".

Same as if you're in your house, cleaning your guns upstaires, when you decide to run downstairs to grab a beer.... Someone darts in and takes your gun...

I'm sure it could go on and on and on...

As for the Kolpin... Probably be better off for a shotgun then, not a sighted rifle...?

I've been using the Kolpin cases on my quads since 1993/94 and have carried scoped rifles in them for appr 7000 - 8000 hard miles I have never had an issue with the scope being knocked out from this kind of riding.

As you can see from my earlier post with the picture of my ATV I mount the case on the front rack.

Once about 10 years ago while going thru an extra deep cross ditch I touched the front of the case onto the ground in front of me resulting in the case/rifle breaking off and catapulting the case/rifle into the ground.

The rifle was a Sako Hunter IV in 375 H&H with a Leupold Vari X 11 3-9X40mm scope when I removed it from the case and fired a shot the rifle was still perfectly sighted in.

About 2 years ago I was going up a steep cross ditch with a 12" dia log hidden behind a branch at the top when the ATV started to flip over backwards I bailed the crash of my quad busting up as it hit the ground upside down was terrible.

I was able to flip it up right and straighten out the handle bars enough to ride it out but the Kolpin case had completely snapped off when I took the rifle out the rear Leupold scope base screw had snapped resulting in the rear scope ring no longer being attached to the base.

The scope was a Leupold VX111 4.5-14X40mm nothing happened to the scope and I am using it on that rifle still after replacing the screw.

Yep I'd totally recommend Kolpin cases they have carried my rifles safely for miles and saved a couple from being busted up.

You should send that story in to Kolpin. It might in their next advertisement!!

On the other hand,I had a friend bring me a rifle because it was suddenly shooting so high that he could not adjust it to point of aim at 100 yards.Upon close examination,it was very evident that the scope tube was actually bent down at the front. The gun was being carried in a Kolpin gun boot when he hit a large drop off that he hadn't realized was nearly so large. The gun boot looked totally undamaged, but the scope had absorbed the total impact while supporting the weight of the gun.The scope had to be replaced.A few other friends have had scopes knocked off of zero when carried in the Kolpin gun boots, and in all cases, the entire weight of the gun was being supported by the scope, since the scope bottomed out in the gun boot before the barrel.

The above cases of damage described are from guys mounting their boots in an upright position. I too have rans thousands of miles with scoped guns in my Koplin with no damage. Mine too is mounted on the front rack with the gun butt very near the right handlebar. Blaming a boots because you crashed into a ditch is like blaming the spoon for makin you fat :D

The only complaint I have with Koplin is their lack of glue holding the stuffing in the front...you need to learn to lift the butt & let the barrel drag the bottom to get guns with front sites out.....& their crappy mounting systems, nothing a welder won't fix.

The boots were mounted at an angle, neither totally vertical or horizontal.

There were no ditches or crashes involved. There was a drop off that was fairly steep, and plenty of rough terrain, but there was no crash, and no damage to the boot,or the atv.
