actually if you want it done correctly the action is needed that's why it's called fitting avbbl to a action
I cut metric threads on my back gear lathe, but haven't done any on the quick change lathe. It's just easier on the back gear I guess.

Cutting threads can be a real challenge for many, with quick change gear boxes it can be difficult to get the threads to match with those on some receivers and if the operator isn't familiar with both the lathe and the slight differences ???????????

Many small lathes will not slow down enough to cut threads decently and you get chatter and sometimes a broken/chipped tool if the cuts are a bit deep. The other issue is using the wrong material to cut the threads as well as the tool being ground improperly. This leads to sloppy threads and often galling. Many operators go cheap on the cutting lube, in that they don't use enough or none at all, while cutting threads.

It's not so much of an issue now, but there was a time when metric threads from Japan and Europe were not quite the same, that hasn't been a problem with global standardization for a long time, but you might run into issues with threads 50 or more years old.
