Gunsmith-size tap-and-die set

No where in Canada.

Brownell's Inc. in Iowa.

3 x 48, 3 x 56, 4 x 40, 4 x 48, 5 x 40, 6 x 40, 6 x 48, 8 x 40 are a few you may need.

No hijack intended, but can anyone explain why gunsmithing requires their own thread's. I work in Aviation and UNF threads are everywhere, 6x42 8x42 and so on. I wonder why the minute difference's?

Are you serious ?...They are available all over the place....

Here is just one....

http://www.taylortool.ca/

I was not aware that Taylor Tool was all over the place, and I have never heard of them. Good for them if they stock the oddballs.

Try ordering a 6 x 48 and an 8 x 40 and see what they say.......

......most counter jockeys will tell you there is no such size and then when you explain that it is a National Special size they will tell you they will have to see if they can order it.....

......at least that has been my experience. I gave up trying any other supplier for these special sizes 25 years ago.

Brownells stock them all.

Taylor tool is not all over the place, but any industrial supply place will order them in for you....faster than making an out of country order...

As for ordering....been there, done that...no problems at all.....

You call on Monday....they make the taps and they are in the mail and on the way to your mailbox on Wednesday.....

I got mine from Brownells but I do recall seeing them listed by Taylor. Taylor also had the oddball taps and dies that are used in the audio industry, ie for mic stand threads, 5/8-27. Not cheap but quite difficult to get otherwise.

The reason for the different sizes for gunsmithing is that with the finer thread you get a better fit and tenstile strength since you have smaller holes or when you are dealing with small parts as in rifles and handguns. You get more metal to metal contact with thefiner thread. Hope that answer some of your questions. I have bought quite a few taps and dies and other machine tools from Brownells. They have a great knowledge and understanding of what a person wants when they are talking about firearms. Shipping has been fast and the prices are very good. I have tried to buy from a place like Acklands and other tool stores KMS and others. When I tell them the size I need you get the Deer in Headlights look.

I have used both....

I have also used a premium tap from Brownells at $12.25.. and I felt is was considerably better but the cheap $4 taps do work very well.

I can't say I will be trying the $27.86 tap as I have no need to.
