I have a ruger 96/44 with one of those 4-shot rotary magazines. The spring mechanism seems weak, and was thinking a plain old single-stack magazine style would seem simpler.
How does the spring seem weak? Doesn't feed?
A replacement mag runs $26.75US from Gunparts. Having a mag made would cost a whole bunch more than that. You could end up with a mag that's worth more than the rifle.
If the .44 magazine is built like the 10/22 magazine you simply have to retension the spring, I believe the instructions are in the manual. A properly functioning Ruger rotary mag is way better than any stick mag in my opinion.
The magazine is often the most difficult part to make. It would be much easier to machine an AK reciever than the magazine. Mags are generally made on multiple operation stamping presses or molded from plastic. There are a few mags which are machined but this likly won't work as a replacement for a sheet metal mag. Your best bet would be to modify a similar mag to fit.
