Howdy,
Ive revisited the 270 WSM saga, the deal is too sweet for me not to look back into..

So the dilemma was around having a small enough thread an tap screw Die thingy, to re thread the hole once I drill it out....

What sizes am I Looking at or For?

all I can find online is screw size 0.25 ...

is there a certain thread size or screw size I should be looking at to go one bigger than factory an the stufup!

Thanks

I would expect it to be tapped for 6x48 which can be drilled out and tapped to 8x40. These two sizes are pretty much standard for scope base screws. Go to Brownell's web site, they have a mother load of taps dies and screws. Not sure what is available in your neck of the woods but most large tool supply cataloges have the proper drills and taps needed. Not so much tap screw die thingys.;)

Screw sizes for gun smith work are not something you will usually find at any industrial supply place as they are not used much. What you want to do if you have any of the other screws is take one to a machine shop and get it measured and screw pitch determined. with a pitch gauge. Once you get the right dimensions you can usually get what you need ordered in. What you want is a bottoming tap as I would assume their would not be enough depth for a starting tap to work unless the hole goes all the way through. Rear screw holes on an action usually do front may or may not. As for the screws them selves you want to measure the total depth and the depth of the mount by itself. Best thing is take it to a gunsmith. might save you a lot of time and money. Small screw removal is a total pain in the butt,it is really easy to screw things up beyond repair.

I went to our local "supply everything" industrial store, and bought 6-48 taps, 8-40 Taps and the tap drills for both right across the counter.
I was a bit surprised to find them in stock there, but they had them at the time. D.
