Hey folks, my go to gunsmith, who shall remain nameless, refuses to cut down and thread an older barrel for chokes. He is a great gunsmith and I trust him completely, so when he says that cutting and threading a barrel for chokes is a recipe for disaster, because of the thinning of the metal which creates a weak point, I believe him.

But, then again, I know of a few folks in the states that have successfully had the above mentioned procedure done successfully, and have gone without incident for years.

Thoughts?

Does anyone know of a gunsmith in the Montreal area who has done this sort of thing before? How much did they charge?

Check out with Casey Brouwer at Tactical Ordnance. He's in Newmarket, ON; but I shipped shotgun barrels to him to have them threaded for chokes. Charged me around $90 IIRC.
However, get calipers and check the outer diameter of the barrel where you want it cut down: if it's under 0.850"; you'll need to go for Tru Chokes threads, if it's under 0.825"; you would need Thinwall chokes (I don't think Casey has the tooling for that), if it's under 0.805"; you are out of luck.

It depends on the gun. Maybe your barrels are too thin, hence why your gunsmith will not do it. Or maybe, as mentioned, it would require thin wall chokes and he can't install them. What kind of gun are we talking about?

Your gunsmith is out of his depth if he believe that applies to ALL guns. It may be that HE can't cut and thread a barrel properly but that doesn't mean it's a recipe for disaster for all guns or all companies. Teague, Briley and Precision are three companies that can do that work on very thin barrels.

There are possible exceptions (e.g. older Browning Superposeds) but most shotguns can be fitted with aftermarket choke tubes.

You could try Paul Barrette at ReddNobb.com. He's in Ste. Martine.

This is where I think the early Grizzly's get screwed. I think the barrel is too thin to choke em.

It certainly depends on the barrel. there is a min thickness that Casey will do. but if He says its a go? I'd trust him to do it. Tac ord did a install for me using TRU-Chokes. Work was well done and a very pleasant place to deal with.
