GunsmithTV or The Garage Gunsmiths...

So...I was at home this weekend sitting contentedly on the couch watching WildTV, when I was struck with an idea. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a show that taught/showed you how to do a variety of gunsmithing jobs. The tasks could range from the very simple like rebluing a barrel or bedding a rifle, to more complex jobs like rechambering a rifle or a custom precision rifle build (hell, that would be several episodes on it's own :D). How friggen cool would that show be?!?! :)

So, then I got to thinking about CGN and how there are so many talented and knowledgeable gunsmith right here on our very own forum...and that maybe this could be a damn good career move for one or a couple of you guys. You could start filming mock episodes in which you're doing the various gunsmithing tasks and maybe do a little hunting or attend some shooting competitions with your repaired/customized firearms to add a little spice, and pitch the idea for the show to the guys at WildTV. I don't know about the rest of you guys...but, I'd love watching a show like that. I think it could be like American Choppers goes Gun Nutz! :dancingbanana:

BTW, when one of you guys becomes rich and famous off of this brilliant idea don't forget who came up with it!! :D

Cool..

Until the first idiot tries it.. messes it up, end up taking his own life due to the modifications he made(based on your show), and his estate (who is anti gun) sues your pants off..

Good Idea, but not so good in reality. Todays world won't protect you from someone elses stupidity..
 
That would be a great TV show. I wonder if something like that would ever be aired due to the legality and liability of someone building a gun barrell, not knowing what he is doing and blowing himself up. A sieries on DVD that a person could buy would be good as well.
 
Having seen far too much evidence of Bubba and his English counterpart Bodger on too many guns I think it's a great idea provided it comes with the warning "Professional gunsmiths. Do not try this at home."
 
Just had a good look at a very expensive Piotti that "Bubba" (... supposedly a "Gunsmith" ) had a go at. Butchered screw-heads, engraving filed-over & polished-off to "repair/hide" screw damage, warped trigger guard ... just enough to want to make you :puke:

Maybe there should be a reality TV show on Do It Yourself Lobotomy's
for Bubba ( or Bodger ) ... might help keep them away from the workbench.
 
Ya no, this is a good idea...the Biker`s did it, and even the #### indrustrie has done it to help turn their image around. Why cant the gunnutz?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Just look at the crazy stuff they do on MythBusters...home-made rockets, exploding trombones, firing lengths of chain out of a canon, etc. Plus they do a lot of work with firearms, so if warnings like "don't try this at home" work on their show I don't see why it wouldn't work for a Gunsmithing show.

But, I guess if warnings weren't enough to get passed the TV content regulators there could be an opportunity for an online video podcast that you could buy a subscription to, to have access to all the episodes on demand. Where there's a will, there's a way! :D
 
There are a series of videos put out by American Gunsmithing Institute. They are a teaching type of video, so really dry, but can give some ideas.

Ouch! Taking a Piotti to most "gunsmiths" is like taking a Lambourghini for repair work at Canadian Tire.
 
CB ... Yeah, when the guy fixing your lawnmower says "Oops", it ain't really no big deal. When your neurosurgeon (or the guy fixing your Piotti) says "Oops", it may cause a little alarm !!! :eek:
 
It would be interesting enough to me that I'd watch, but it would be a shame if it resulted in a lot more work not being taken to gunsmiths. It is hard enough for them to make a living and if we don't use their services enough, they won't be in business when we really need them. An opportunity for gunsmiths to showcase what they can do would help drum up business for the trade. I'd like to see any show about gunsmithing include real professional gunsmiths showing us things they can do that we can't do ourselves, for lack of training, practise, facilities, etc. and giving us all a better understanding of how our guns work and an fuller appreciation of them.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I've built many a fine firearms that have required extensive gunsmith work. It seems the good ones never have problems getting work, but the ones you wouldn't trust an air pistol to constantly have trouble getting work..... I wonder why.:D
 
there was a US hunting show that was on cable here a few years ago. These guys had all the latest gears and gadgets. regardless they had a show segment that they used to do some general gunsmithing they called it. how to rebarrel your rifle, install TRUGLO on your gobble gun or glass bed your M98. Of course they also built a huge timber frame hunting lodge.
 
There needs to be a common forum for gunsmiths in Canada and that goes for amateurs also. I can re-finish stocks, tap receivers etc. but I'll never make a living at it. Most gunsmiths supplement their income at their shops by selling and buying firearms, ammo and accessories etc. In the US the industry is big because of the population base and because the government isn't anti firearms. Gunsmiths need to showcase their stuff online. If someone made a firearm that was used on a safari then it should be shared. A gunsmith show might be slow unless you get tool time Tim on it. Videos and DVDs are great as you can rewind and do some repairs etc. along with them. I am creating a country wide list of Canadian gunsmiths to post so if I move anywhere in this country I know where to find one. If you are a practising gunsmith with a shop let me know and I will get you on my list by province. If someone gets into shooting and buys a clunker that needs some work then knowing where to go is half the battle. Cheers.

"When a customer brings in a gun with 6 slugs stuck in the barrel, get the money up front, He might be stupid enough to kill himself in some dumb ass way before he can pick it up."
