Gutsy survivor keeps hunting

He may not be completely alone, but he certainly doesnt have meals cooked for him every day by a crew, and he certainly does make all his own shelters and fires(even if they arent great)

Yeah. but at the end of the day, he can afford to make mistakes. You won't be able to.

fair enough, I don't disagree with you one bit.
My main point was that he is better than some of theother idiots out there...
Bear Grylls and Les Stroud both did desert episodes, Bear Grylls drank his Urine straight, and Les constructed a still to get clean water...

somehow I dont think I will ever be stranded in the deserts of Canada.

and this is 1 of my problems with these shows, they get money from our taxes to make there shows and 1 or 2 episodes hit around home then they go off left field and start doing shows that an average Canadian is never going to be in.

1 show I will recomend as there is no you have to do this kind of attitude is Ray Meres "Bushcraft" no t a super resource tool but does show what ancient tribes and people around the world have been doing for 100s of years, from simple tools to shelters and hunting tecniques etc.

I just find hes not trying to aww the veiwer and that makes for a better show imho.

and yes Leslea jerkey is great, I wasnt even thinking of it as its always in the freezer around here :)

If you are hunting carry enough bullets to make a few distress signals. Remember, the sound of a rifle will carry a lot farther than a whistle. Unless you can hear people searching for you at night save your ammunition as most searching is done in the day light. Having said that we found a couple of kids at two in the morning.

Use clothing made from other material than cotton. If you have a pack with survival items in it take it with you everywhere you go as it is not worth a darn when you are lost in the bush and it is sitting in the truck. Carry a survival pack with enough to get you through a survival situation. Don't have everything including the kitchen sink as you have to carry it around and it may feel light when you first put it on but after a few hours it will start to weigh. After a while it will sit on the seat of the truck. Carry things in water proof containers. Carry a spare T-shirt because if the one you are wearing gets sweated up it is like a breath o fresh air to put on a dry one. If you are cold the start a fire and warm up. Carry a small road flare in your pack as in an emergency it will get even damp wood burning but remember to stand it upright as on it's side it can go out. A freezer bag and a t-shirt soaked in hot water can make a hot pack in a pinch.

Having said all of the above I have never been lost to the point I had to spend the night in the bush in an uncontrolled environment. I have blindly followed my compass a few times. I would like to think I would manage but until we are in that situation none of us know how we will react and multiply it by a bunch if you are alone. The first step is to be aware of the fact that every time you venture into the forest you could end up in a survival situation. Remember, you don't have to be miles from a road to be in a survival situation.

Man that is so true. I got lazy this year because i was hunting somewhere "not in the boonies" and left my usual gear behind because I was 'just going a little way in". For a variety of reasons it wound up getting dark before I got out and for a moment I was disoriented enough in woods that were heavy enough that I seriously considered holding up for the night instead of trying to get out thru some VERY nasty woods with all kinds of ankle-breaking foot-stabbing hazards. As it is, it wasn't necessary but at that point I was only about 70 or 80 meters from the road. But it was bad enough that if i hadn't gotten in figured out in about 4 or 5 mins i'd have stayed put rather than risking going deeper into the woods by mistake and getting seriously hurt climbing over the crap on the ground with almost no light. Wouldn't have been a big deal, i still would have had a fire going pretty quick and been fine, wasn't that cold and no rain, but it sure got me thinking about the value of having ALL your basic gear with you even when you're close to the road.

Silly question Bone... You mentioned you do work with SAR... You seem to have a pretty solid understanding of where the other guys mucked up. Why not apply for a film grant & show how it's SUPPOSED to be done?

My bet is you'd have a REALLY good product by the end of things. It's worth considering.

Glad you like the Jerky idea :)

Military tracer in 308 and 30-06 bullet could be pulled and reloaded into other 30 calibers cartridges, and thus make a very long range and effective way of signaling helicopers, planes and ground searches in case of emergency, as well as be very lightweight to carry few of these rounds ?

That would stay in the 'sky' for a second or so. A pen flare and bangers makes a lot more sense, they're designed to do that job. Why try to re-invent the wheel? Better just to use the right tool.

Yeah! THen we could sell it to fox afterwards as a 'proof saskquatch exists' video! :D :D

( hmm. burns lake about 1000 k away, bones drives slow, so with traffic i have about 12 hours to live i'd say :D Think i'll go practice a little 'wilderness survival' right now!)

Seriously tho kate, you'd have to have a scriptwriter, a director etc on the project with at least SOMETHING looking like credentials before anyone would touch it.

Probably easier just to make a 'home' job and pass it around 'shareware' if you will.

Bone-Collector, I have to agree with you on "Survivorman". There has to be a bail out switch which can used to get the guy out of a real jam. In the real world we brought some of the unlucky ones out in body bags.

Call it a hunch there Foxer, but I bet it wouldn't be a huge problem to put a lil team together.

Heck, even as a youtube series, it'd be something worth considering at this point ;)

As for the sasquatch bit... DAMN hon... Don't forget to take some TP when you run out... Nothing rougher than leaves... roughage, eep!

Leslea that would be great rightup until I decided:

#1 I was hungry and blasted a critter on film (antis would have heart failure)
#2 decided I was lost and built a log home out of the remaining 6 live evergreens the beetles havent killed off
#3 swore at the bear I ran into on film....before I stuffed his arse with lead

my 1st job with SAR here is basicaly a hired gun, I took the specialty courses and bear courses to be 1 of the guys called in when a bear could be involved or is involved, I also do team leader on grids from time to time when needed.

in the spring of 2008 we will be holding our 1st annual big bear bash hunt, we have invited several people to atend it in northern BC as basicaly a get together/bear hunt as well I will be putting on with the help of my son Chris a basic tracking course and basic survival course. I am not certified in mantracking yet but done nuff courses I should be.

ROFL!!! If people don't grasp that in a pinch you shoot to eat or protect yourself in the bush, they have NO business being out in the bush. Likewise when it comes to shelter. Trees can be replanted. People can't be.

Sounds like you're going to be having a good time come this spring.

As for mantracking... It'd be SERIOUSLY KEWL to see you as the guide on an ep or 2 of Mantracker. (I LOVE that show).

Actually - i want to see him be one of the trackees :) Bones would likely evade him, and THEN jump out and give him hell for all the mistakes he's making, then punch him in the nose :D It'd be worth the cost of bailing him out of jail to see it if you ask me.

I'm looking forward to it this spring, i haven't taken any of the mantracker courses and it should be interesting.

I think that it's important to know what various methods and tricks the guys who are looking for you are going to use. Knowing what they're thinking, you can make it a little easier for them.

that show drives me crazy, the guy never gets off his dam horse, its like hide and seek for adults, real life people wouldnt be trying to avaid you, but as a game its alright (id kick his lilly white butt)

now I did look at http://www.findmespot.com/

low and behold ol Les is on there, now how alone is he on survivorman?
I know some folks have no idea or what to beleive in, but in real life do you think that they would let anything happen to there star? no they wouldnt he will never get into it with nature to a point were life or limb may be on the line, BUT reality you could be one day.

Personaly I find shows like this to lead people in a sence of false security of knowing what they have been told, sometimes no or little information is better than bad information.

another thing I should have elaberated on was bashing Les over building shelters by rivers, alot of folks dont relise rivers can be like tidal water at times, rising and dropping sometimes 1-2 feet in a day and daily, some alot less than that in the 3-8 inches daily, but it does happen and having a shelter near the water could result in being flooded out.

this could go on and on but in the end common sence will win, you can have all the gadgets and tools in the world but if you have never used or practiced with them they are just dead weight in the end!

LOL, and don't forget the bit about punching him in the nose & telling him where he's screwed up. LOL!!!

Common sense is about as rare as those people who can spell... "Sense"... ;)

You're absolutely right about practicing. It's essential. In ALL sorts of weather conditions.

Well there's an old pilot saying:

"In a crisis, people do NOT 'rise to the occasion', they default to their level of training whatever that may be" :)

In short - you gotta practice like you'll face in the 'real world' because when it hits the fan you'll do whatever you trained to do, and if that was 'nothing' then that's probably what you'll do.
