H and R Revolver cylinder fit questions

Hello

I'm making a couple of pins etc for a fella so he can get his H&R revolver back from to pile of parts it's been for God knows how long.
This is my first time working on a revolver. It's 100 or so years old and I was wondering about the cylinder slop.
It has .6mm gap between the frame and the front of the cylinder. The barrel clearance is also substantial.

Is this normal for these old guns and is it worth making a small shim to take up this slop

It's a Young American. Solid frame. 22 short I believe.

Since the owner can buy any more he's resorted to trying to fix up all the project antiques and prohibited he has.
 
Ah, that gun shouldn't stretch. I have played with a .32 version quite a lot and it had pretty tight tolerances. Less than .01" cylinder gap, .6mm is .024", I don't have much experience with these guns but that seems like a lot. I never measured the frame gap but I don't recall any slop.
 
This one is a pile of parts from several different guns. So I guess it's no surprise things don't fit as they should.
I've made a new hammer pin and had to machine the replacement barrel to get the sights Idexed properly. Still might need another 360 degrees to close up the cylinder to barrel gap.

I'll see if I can find some .020 shim stock and try a spacer as well. Not like this old girl is going to the range but I still want it to be the best it can.

I do this one up right them hopefully more projects from the same fella in the future.
As a self taught gun smith this one definitely has been a fun challenge so far
 
I've had 8 of the young americas come through according to the records in both 32 and 22 and all but one were pretty sloppy. And even on the one that looked new, the gaps were certainly larger than on a DW or Colt though it indexed well. Don't have any here at the moment though... I believe they were rather low quality cheap guns so wore out quickly
 
If you shim the cylinder ahead ,them you can end up with head space, timing problems, if it's a wrong cylinder, timing may be off anyway, quite common on these if worn.
The star is quite soft on these it seems to me. Newer H&R where well made.
Light strikes can happen if cylinder rear gap is too much as well. 22 short is not a big deal with a bit of barrel gap.
I liked CB caps, low noise and low power for mouse loads in these old ones.
