Glory to the H&K!

From GearScout:

40 years after the introduction of the HKMP5 SD, Heckler & Koch will release the new MR556A1-SD and MR762A1-SD. The new SD design incorporates technology from American suppressor manufacturer Operators Suppressor Systems into the combat proven HK416/HK417 platforms.

The updated platform also includes HK’s new Modular Rail System (MRS) in 14″ or 9″ which looks like a KeyMod compatible handguard with integrated QD sling swivel flush cups

The OSS suppressor system also improves the HK platform by adding caliber and configuration modularity, individual suppressor component sustainability, greater than 90% reduction in blowback and bolt velocity compared to competing suppressor systems. The OSS system comprises a back pressure regulator (BPR) and a sound reduction module (SRM). The rifle is shot ‘unsuppressed’ with the BPR installed. This reduces flash and noise noticeably, but the addition of the SRM will reduce the muzzle noise to 139db at the shooters ear.

It’s interesting that these mods are being applied to the civilian version of these rifles. Perhaps these cans find their way onto 14.5″ guns to become the HK416/HK417A6-SD at some point. There’s no doubt these rifles will be expensive. But, we won’t have a price until HK officially releases the rifles at SHOT Show next week in Las Vegas.

That BPR piece is interesting.

Wonder what the RCMP Firearm Lab will think of it though!

I don't think the BPR would be much more than a big open front blast chamber that extends back over the barrel (they say it only sticks .63" in front of the muzzle) - (more volume means less pressure the baffles have to deal with). May be designed with a flash hider built in, but it doesn't look like it will do anything without the front baffle stack installed.

It appears that the suppressor component is just a little baffle stack that screws onto the big blast chamber.

In short, I don't think the BPR will be or do anything (aside from being a likely VERY expensive barrel shroud) but would allow a suppressor to attach to it. Same legal status as any of the AAC QD muzzle brakes or comps I'm going to guess?

My intended sarcasm didn't come across too well I guess ;) !

Joking aside, I don't think the BPR will actually change the dB output of the gun at all, but it's hard to say without seeing the front of it. It may have a single baffle at the front to redirect gasses but the way it sounds is that it's only a big expansion chamber and nothing more. At worst it would be like a Noveske flaming pig or a linear comp.

But who knows, RCMP may ban it because it has too many flat sides! :p

Anyone find the 'lab' title a bit odd? They don't do tests. Their research is a Liberal mantra recital. What other lab takes 3-5 years to test something? It's like it's run by the government.

Because if they can't find a reason to make it prohibited they delay until the law exists to make it prohibited.
Just like contract law, delay until contract is void or until your opponent is bankrupt.
