Not just classed as variants, they are indisputably variants.
The chicken and egg AR-15/AR-10 wrangling aside.
The MR223 is an AR-15, the MR308 is in all probablity an AR-10. Both by design and construction.
If I remember correctly, out at the range we tried to mate a Remington R-15 lower to the MR223 upper and vice versa. It was so close that at least one of the configurations would have functioned if you held it closed. The take down pins just don't line up quite right.
MR223 has the take down pins offset 3mm so it will not fit on a F/A lower (German Laws)
Hk416 fits on AR15/M16FOW lowers fine (well not Noveske who built his mag catch shelf to high)
Since I don't think Hk got the Hk417 right yet, I would not be running out to buy a MR308 anytime soon...

The Hk417 was a bust at the UK Mod Sharpshooter competition, as well as several units that have trialed it have had very disappointing results from what I'm told.
Some guns run, but inaccurate, and the accurate ones don't feed reliably.

One major difference with the Euro firearm manufacturers compared to NA and the Asians: They are usually spotless and so are the workers. The attention to detail in all forms costs more and the same for the cnc equipment and labour. Many of the better Euro manufacturers even check the cnc tooling every few hours to ensure quality and specs.
I have visited a number of NA plants and Euro plants. It is day and night!

dude you look at G36's ?
Look at marks on Hk23 and Hk21's LMG's -- welds are visible as are tooling marks.
The difference is the Euro sporting market is very much 'curb appeal' to finish and appearance. Whereas a US manufacturer will run the same parts for Mil/LE sale and commerical to keep things down costwise, the Euro's will run two.

Come on now. You can't value a g36 in straight dollars. It doesn't compute. One must compare it to M78 asking dollars. A g36 is roughly twice the gun as a m78. An M78 is about $4500(asking, I don't think they sell at that). So, a g36 is easily "worth" 9000 M78 asking dollars.Ya just like that one but not $9000 when its worth about $1500. I would pay $4000 for one but thats my limit for getting scammed

You could get an HK SL8 and convert it to look like a G36 for less money than buying the G36. By the way, you won't get scammed buying HK. You get what you pay for.
