First of my P7 series guns coming in to me got in yesterday, WOW. It's such a radical departure from the North American style pistols, a whole different ball game. Makes even the USP (my previous favorite 'foreign' gun, and laf, yes to call the USP foreign is blasphemy) feel like a Ford after driving a BMW (And I like Fords
).
For starters, it's miniscule. However the grip is of a very reasonable size and very comfortable (1911'esque), as is the grip angle. Now it gets sooo much better; single action pull, all the time, virtually no exterior controls, and has to be the absolute easiest pistol to dissasemble and clean I've yet encountered. Just press one button, pull the slide back and up, and your gun pops into three pieces; recoil spring, slide, and barrel/frame; nothing to loose and fumble with like 1911 slide stops, guide rods etc. (And I'm a huge 1911 fan!)
Better yet; change mags, all you do is squeeze the grip and the slide drops and chambers a round. The grip cocking is very natural, smooth, and the pin that extrudes to the rear when cocked lets you knows it's ready to go, if you didn't already here it. Loosen your grip, and the P7's on safe. The barrel is fixed so it is very accurate, and the gas closing design unwittingly regulates itself to how hot the load is (more pressure = the longer the action stays locked). German over-engineering at its best, because this thing is functional and simple!
As another note, one of my P7's is heel release, and the other which is coming in soon is a P7M8, and I have to say this is the only gun the heel release is actually not at all bad on. It works flawlessly, and all you do is push it in, button style, and the mag flies out and free just like any other pistol. No fumbling with a heel hook and "dragging" mags out. Can't wait to play with the M8...
