H&K P7 series, why did I wait so long to get them?

First of my P7 series guns coming in to me got in yesterday, WOW. It's such a radical departure from the North American style pistols, a whole different ball game. Makes even the USP (my previous favorite 'foreign' gun, and laf, yes to call the USP foreign is blasphemy) feel like a Ford after driving a BMW (And I like Fords :p ).

For starters, it's miniscule. However the grip is of a very reasonable size and very comfortable (1911'esque), as is the grip angle. Now it gets sooo much better; single action pull, all the time, virtually no exterior controls, and has to be the absolute easiest pistol to dissasemble and clean I've yet encountered. Just press one button, pull the slide back and up, and your gun pops into three pieces; recoil spring, slide, and barrel/frame; nothing to loose and fumble with like 1911 slide stops, guide rods etc. (And I'm a huge 1911 fan!)

Better yet; change mags, all you do is squeeze the grip and the slide drops and chambers a round. The grip cocking is very natural, smooth, and the pin that extrudes to the rear when cocked lets you knows it's ready to go, if you didn't already here it. Loosen your grip, and the P7's on safe. The barrel is fixed so it is very accurate, and the gas closing design unwittingly regulates itself to how hot the load is (more pressure = the longer the action stays locked). German over-engineering at its best, because this thing is functional and simple!

As another note, one of my P7's is heel release, and the other which is coming in soon is a P7M8, and I have to say this is the only gun the heel release is actually not at all bad on. It works flawlessly, and all you do is push it in, button style, and the mag flies out and free just like any other pistol. No fumbling with a heel hook and "dragging" mags out. Can't wait to play with the M8...

Sounds pretty cool, but I'm not to sure about the asthetics from the pics I have seen. Mind you something new, or different, always takes a while to get used to.

edit to add...new to me. I still think they look a bit odd too.

I've had two P7M8s and while I admired all of the attributes so eloquently
stated by Ardent, I found the grip a little too small....
I have found perfection in the P7M13.. 10 + 1 rounds at your disposal and a grip size that, for me, is just right!:D
Too bad the P7 line has been, or is about to be, discontinued...:(

Yes, the P7 series is certainly nice to shoot... but, I agree with Foxbat. The grip is just a little too small for my liking. I currently have a P7M13 on the way, so it will be interesting to compare.

People who have not tried one are absolutely missing out. Accurate, well-balanced, easy to shoot, and just downright cool.

yes they have been.. you should see the aniversary edition of that gun... it's HOT...

Yes I remember seeing one on the board here a little while back, really fought with myself over that one and if I should have bought it. At the time I was still married, and had a fair bit more financial "constraints", now I'm free to dispose of my funds as I wish and hence I've ended up with two P7's...

And for those of you who didn't guess already, the M8 is coming from Uncle Walther, I'm glad to hear you found an M13 Rob, that was very quick. Should work better for your absurdly large hands... I realized just how big they were when I reflected on your picture of the M8 in your hand and looked down at the P7 in mine, still very small, but not that small!

I guess I should have stated the grip size is very good for me, more appropriately, I have quite large palms but short fingers, and that combination seems to work on just about any handgun for me, except when it comes to reaching mag releases... :( 1911's require a significant twist of the pistol, which has become quite fluid, but still not entirely natural. I guess I'm one of the few who likes the USP's catch, and hopefully the M8 :) , because I can use my pointer and thumb to push down the mag catch without shifting grip.

I have 3 of them. A PSP (old german border patrol), M10 and M13 and none of them are for sell. The perfect pistol IMHO. So accurate and just ###y. My GF will probably get one for herself (no way she's gonna beat my guns) since she got rid of her ### Ruger MKII.

Anyone got their P7 chromed ?
