H&K U$P, why so pricey?

I swear this board suffers from, "Norinco syndrome" where every gun more expensive than what you can get for the cheapest possible, is somehow inherently "too" expensive.

A few things:
-H&K pays workers in Germany a good wage (plus benefits, holidays, taxes, etc.) to assemble, proof, inspect, and make sure the gun is perfect. A USP will have phenomenal fit and finish, etc.
-H&Ks, being German, are imported into Canada. I would imagine that the distributors who buy the gun are paying for a gun in Euros, from a company that pays its employees in Euros.
-The liability and warranty that comes with the gun (although I've heard the latter is lacking on this side of the border) is factored into the cost of the gun.
-The parts used to make the gun are of an extremely high quality.
-The design and testing that went into the gun are reflected into the price.

Hey I'm not going to pretend that I am some all knowing gun guru (far from it). Some things with the prices didn't make sense to me but now you've cleared it up for me. I have never been one to rag on a high price of a firearm (everything is more money than I would want it to be) mr00jimbo, I agree, the quality of H&K is superb! (Best poly gun IMHO). Thanks for all the help guys.

For some reason when I was calling around to different dealers they kept referring to the HK USP 45c as the new one. No one could tell me what the difference was. It was However not the HK45. I ended up getting the HK USP45c for $1100

Thanks T

That is exactly what I am looking for as well. There is just something about the USP that I have always been really fond of... I don't know if its the unique overall shape or the look of that safety/de-cocker... I just love the gun.

It does have a large, blocky grip. The only issue people really have with H&K is the price, but if you are looking at this price range pistol, it doesn't come into play. The only negative I have about the USP is the long DA trigger, otherwise everything is superb. Excellent fit/finish/accuracy. People I let try it at the range love it.

When I fired one I immediately noticed that if I were to own one, my thumb was not very well matched with the mag release. The grip wasn't perfect, but I shot pretty well with it and still loved the gun despite the minor gripes I had with it, and yeah, the DA trigger pull would take some getting used to.

With H&K's I use the middle finger of my dominant hand to drop the mag. I find it even quicker than traditional mag releases. ymmv

BTW- love the sig name, I listen daily to O&A!

Not sure why the mag release is so different on H&K's but you should try one before you buy... some love it and others hate it.

German made by one of the worlds largest defense contractors = expensive that's just the way it is. I own two hk's one 9mm and one in .45 and they are super high quality and worth the money IMO.

Most HK haters quote the price as the biggest negative. Everyone knows they are excellent pistols and stack up very well with other brands.

I think you missed a big part of my thread... The price of the firearm has jumped up $300 dollars in price only in Canada! The price has stayed the same in the U.S. I only asked about this particular firearm because Glock, Sig, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Kimber, etc... prices have not increased in the same way. I understand inflation and profit margins. This does not seem to be that (on H&K's part anyway). You contributed exactly nothing to answering my question, and just acted like a know-it-all dickhead instead. Shove your ceramic frying pan up your trolling ass.

ok...in an effort to tone this down a bit.

I think HK has done a great job in creating a mystic of "exclusiveness".....they don't mind the reputation that they are a supplier of military firearms....too busy to care about consumers. They love the reputation they have as a "serious" firearms manufacturer and that they have bigger fish to fry than caring about Billy Bob from Wherever, Canada.

That said, I have a HK45 and enjoy it very much...if it breaks, which I doubt, I'll be pretty much screwed. Still love shooting it.

I almost bought this one, HK 2-Tones are just impeccable. Sight sponsor Al Flaherty's:

HK USP45 v.1 SA/DA .45ACP $1099

Have a bunch of other USP's too, a blued USP45, 9 and 40 as well, P30's too.

$799 for a P2000 Lem 40 @ Wolverine

and many more... Lots of them around. Now the OP can pick one. Comparing USA and Canadian prices is a fight nobody will win. Most things are more expensive without much reason for it. Thank your gov't taxes and red tape or the small market markup of Canadian retailers. That's just the way it is unless you want to purchase in the USA and import it which may or may not save you money. This isn't worth fighting about. It's just reality.

Wow, not much H&K hate in the thread, im surprised. The H&K lover's are right the only real complaint about them is they are overpriced. And they're the size of a watermelon.
