H&K UMP/USC - anyone have one or shoot one?

What do ump lowers go for? Is it worth it for me to bang out a couple out of aluminum on my machine at work or is it a waste of time? Can you buy parts kits/uppers like an ar15 or does it end up costing more than the whoe gun complete?

USC/UMP's are an interesting design, but they are fairly dated now and much, smaller, better and cheaper designs are readily available for comparable firepower.

Well a HERA Arms UMP buttstock conversion costs $500. HERA re-uses the original trigger housing but relpaces the grip and buttstock. To find a UMP lower can be a PITA and can cost into the $700 range.

I was INCREDIBLY lucky and got a lightly used one for 550 bucks, but I've heard as high as 900 for them.

They wouldn't be too hard to machine out, except for the pistol grip area. You could modify an AR15 grip to work, but you would need to cut the 'ears' off as there is a trigger component that goes partway into the upper grip (on one side)

I had thought about designing one originally as I was having trouble getting my lower, but when I did I scrapped the project.

If I still had my USC lower I could have given it to you, but I threw it out a couple years ago. The USC and UMP lowers are VERY similar except for the mag well difference, and the grip and the attachment point at the rear.

I would actually say the USC lower would be a better starting place, but you'd need a UMP lower to get the rear attachment point for the stock blocks measured.

I'd be more inclined to buy a USC if it was in 9mm but that's because 9mm is what I reload and it's cheaper.
Why is the USC only available in 45ACP?

Price from HK has not really changed. If you look at the prices for the 10 round USC mag anywhere else in the wourld it's much lower. In Europe a USC mag is 70 Euros = $98 CAD. In the US its $64 USD. HK does not do the pinning of the mags. Its 3rd party

I want that contract. Those guys must be rich. I'll do it for a million less a year and still retire in 2 years :)

Was doing a bit of lurking and through the forums and there was a post directing to Blaxsuns list of NR Black Rifles, while looking through I saw that the UMP and the USC were NR (didn't know this prior and just assumed the UMP would be PRO because of how awesome it is). Did a search and there were things here and there but not a whole lot.
So does anyone here: have one / shot one / recommend one / know the availability and price? (I'd assume there are pricey and rare but any info is good)

Here is my USC/USP wana be.

HK USC
Dlask NR barrel
HK sight rails
Dlask Tri rails
HERA arms 5/20 mags
Vertical grip
Trijicon 1x4
HERA arms USC/UMP conversion folding stock

Cost total was around 5k. Shot it twice, once at the rang, once shooting gophers then sold it. Blaxsun is right saying a Kriss is better. If you want a NR USC/UMP it is very very front heavy, the 5/20 mags look sweet but just suck for shooting in any position other then standing, it does feel rather cheep for the amount you spend, AND this is a HUGE AND, mags are stupid stupid expensive (and only hold 5 rounds). The JR carbine and the Kriss Vector both take glock mags with 10 rounds in them, and cost $50 each instead of $150 plus a mag.
It is a sweet looking gun, and if you do the 8" barrel mod and keep it a rang gun it will handle much better. If you want a NR carbine that you can flog in the woods or hunt gophers with, go a different root.

....so..can one buy a parts kit/upper? Or would I end up being stuck with a really nifty paper weight?

You could buy a parts kit (probably) but you'd be looking at the same process as a lower only from the USA, it would be stupid expensive. Really the best bet is to get ahold of a USC lower (just post a WTB add in the EE, they go for cheap in the USA and any guys that have done a USC/UMP conversion should have one sitting around) then modify the dimensions. I could give you the specs of the rear portion where it fits into the stock block, and the width of the magazine well and mag release lever (the UMP and USC mag release levers are the same profile except the UMP is wider) I just can't have any risks of shipping my UMP lower considering the gun would be toast if it got lost somehow. And getting ahold of a new lower (plus the USC trigger parts) would cost a lot more than I'm willing to risk.

I'd be more inclined to buy a USC if it was in 9mm but that's because 9mm is what I reload and it's cheaper.

They tried out the .45 in the US market to see how well it would sell. Considering it was never a really hot seller in the States, they never bothered to release the .40 cal and 9mm variants, although the 9mm bolt and mags can work with a UMP lower (with some machining of the UMP 9mm bolt) and 9mm barrel.

It's a nice looking gun Dylio but I hear what you're saying, I guess it kind of comes down to style or performance with the UMP and Kriss for .45 sub guns.
And holy hell I didn't know H&K magazines were at that price point!

I used to own a UMP 9mm. Nice gun, but it was hard to justify the price for what it was. I paid about $8000 for mine in unfired condition. Then dumped another $1000 into spare mags.
