A buddy in the southern USA purchased an H&K USP , used but by appearance , mint condition from a gun shop . It's a .45 that came with 2 mags . It's a jam-o-matic . It jams with fmj's and hollowpoints with all ammo tested being of 230 grain . It will strip a round from the mag and send it high , so the round doesn't chamber . It will happen at least twice in a full mag from both mags . They are both H&K mags . Someone told him to clean under the extractor as when a round is stripped from the mag the rim must fit under the extractor in order to align the round with the chamber .

Any comments , tips or help appreciated as buddy is about to throw the gun into the Mississippi river . He doesn't have a manual , doesn't know how to take it appart or how to clean under the extractor , if in fact , that's the problem .

I can't see that he'd get two defective H&K mags but we need some help troubleshooting from anyone who owns one .

Try different mags.

X2

Sounds like a magazine problem to me...do make sure the pistol is immaculately clean too though.....you want to narrow the problem down as much as you can by removing variables....dirt is always a variable...

I would say that he may have some aftermarket mags there. I have NEVER heard of this problem with a USP.

Is he using reloads?

He is using Federal Hydra-Shoks and American Eagles , both 230 grain . If he loads one mag with one kind of ammo and the other mag with the other ammo the results are the same . If he changes one ammo to the other mag and vice versa , the same thing . If he alternates one American Eagle and one Hydra-Shok in the same mag , same results . If he's lucky he gets one jam per mag but usually one mag of ammo will jam at least twice .

That would point me towards the mags being the problem....

I feel kinda bad about this as buddy has been a revolver man for half a century . He decided to purchase a semi but it had to be chambered into .45 acp so he asked my opinion on what to buy . I told him that he had 3 choices , those being H&K , Sig and Glock . He chose the H&K and hasn't got one full mag through it yet . It was used but mint and the gunshop owner sold it to the first owner and then took it back on a trade . The gunshop owner figured that the original purchaser put no more than 300 rounds through it . Makes me wonder why a guy would trade a basically new gun back in if something wasn't wrong with it .

Buddy is a lawyer , a very smart guy but with absolutely no mechanical apptitude . If the chain fell off his mountain bike he'd probably have to hire a mechanic to put it back on . He wanted a gun that was good to go out of the box with no tinkering now or in the future so that's why i suggested an H&K , Sig or a Glock . I have Glocks so buddy looked at them all and figured the H&K not only looked better but it fit better also .

check the slide rails..see it its gummed up abit..or if somebody has used excessive lube or grease.. To much lube will cause this effect. Clean it till its almost dry. Clean the mags.

Your friend sounds as if he bought a pistol that someone tried to "improve"
You can't improve a USP. I have a friend who has a tactical and it rarely if ever jams. I can not fathom as to what may be causing the problems; especially if he is using factory ammo. It may be operator error ,9perhaps he is severely limp wristing it, or his hands are smothering the slide and inducing a jam....?
I have had three different USP's, I can count the jams I have had on one hand; after 15,000 ++ rds.

I've had a USP40 for over 4 years and the only jam it has had was from a newby not seating the rounds properly to the rear of the mag. maybe a new mag would be wise to try ? could be the wrong spring in the mag? 10rnd spring in the 12rnd mag or vice versa.

buy new.......this pistol NIB would be 100%

I experienced similar problems when firing super hot ammunition -
My point being that it does sound like a mag problem (lips or springs).

Definitely try new mags before tossing it :)

I've NEVER had a jam or misfeed with my USP - even with 185gr HP - while I was working up loads. Light loads, heavy loads, light grains or heavy - it shoots them all.

Mags are the issue. Or at least, mag springs.
