Hey guys,

I bought an H&R 22-250 Handi-Rifle from a guy here, who happened to BURN me, knowingly selling me a faulty rifle. (It keyholed every shot). Anyways, I sent it back to H&R and they were nice enough to send me a brand new replacement! (They said the originals headspace was way out of spec). It has the semi-heavy BBL and a sightmark 4-14x44 scope, and I free floated the fore end on it with the (rubber o-ring mod).

So, the new rifle shoots good, and now i'm trying to work a load up. I checked the headspace on it, and to the lands, its a little longer than factory spec, which is normal. So far i've tried Varget, and H-380 in it, and will settle with H-380 as the powder of choice. I have 36 gn Varmint Grenade's, 40 Gn NBT, and 40,50,and 53 gn v-max's to work with.

I tried a bunch of loads out this week, so far all with 39 gn of H-380. Some with the 36 gn varmint grenades, and with the 40 gn NBT. i kept the COAL close to stock 2.350, (1.945 with my comparator). I had decent results with 39 gn H-380/36 gn varmint grenade/COAL 2.355 (4 shots within an inch, and 2 flyers)

the next best load was with 39 gns H380, 40 GN NBT, COAL 2.355 (2 shots touching in the bull, and 2 flyers- touching)

I have some stuff to work with here, but am wondering if anyone else has anything to share that i can work off of? any other data is appreciated! I'll prolly try the 50/53 gn Vmax's next (I use them in my weatherby vanguard .223, I have very very good accuracy with them in that rifle!)

I'm finding this handi rifle hard to load for so far. I'll load six or so of each, and four of the shots will be pretty decent, then two of them will fly off.... I dunno, maybe i need to tighten up my quality control! ;-), I use a bullet comparator for each and every test load, so I know my COAL's are bang on (within .005). So what powder/primer/bullet are you guys having success with in this rifle?

thanks for now, ginnz

Have you actually measured the OAL for that rifle? Perhaps playing with how far the bullet is off the lands might solve your issue.

Thanks guys! And yeah, Ive found the OAL for the rifle, Ive tried a few loads working towards the lands, right to touching them, and it seems that I am having better luck staying off them, closer to stock. Although I havn't had time to try different load values too much. I'm just looking for some one else's best load to work off of, grains of powder and bullet weight. I believe i'll prolly have a different OAL though, and will deal with that.

Thanks again guys.

well guys, i thought id update this thread. I think the barrel is finally starting to break in (240 rounds). Ive tried 36 gn varmint grenades, 40 gn NBT, 50 gn NBT, and 50 gn Vmax, Hornady 50 gn varmint (GR SP), and 53 gn vmax. So far, the most accurate load ive managed to make for this thing is the 36 gn Varmint Grenades, with 40 gn of Varget with a COAL .005 longer than stock. Weird. I tried with lighter loads, but anything under 40 gn of Varget doesnt group worth a damn! and i can barley cram 40 gns in the cases... ;-)

Ive tried H380 based loads and the Varget worked better..... But, Im thinking it may have to do with the BBL breaking in. I just made up 25 rounds of the 36 VG/40 Varget, and have a bunch of prepped brass left here. I think ill make a bunch of different loads using the 40 gn Vmax, and try them again.... overall, this rifle has been the hardest to dial in for me!

thanks for all the links guys!

Ginnz.
