H&R barrels in Canada

From everything I've looked into, I think it's not going to happen which is too bad. H&R fits each barrel to the action which you are supposed to ship to them and then they're supposed to ship the whole thing back to you. I'm not sure if anyone has ever bothered to do it.

I wish H&R shipped short chambered barrels to Canada and then local smiths could do the finish reaming.

well that sucks, just traded for one in 270 win it's a great little rifle, would have liked to get a barrel in 444 marlin to, but if it has to go to the states it might be cheaper to buy another rifle

We tried to bring the barrel accessory program to Canada, and we were well on our way to getting it done, including send smiths for hands on fitment training... AND THEN... The Big Green takeover! It probably won't happen now. Unchambered barrels won't be shipped because the problem has always been fitment liability.

For those Handi fans among us, this has never been an issue... Barrel fitting has never been a difficult issue to conquer. I have fit many dozens of barrels to SB2 receivers... And only came across one that was worn too far from the OEM spec tolerances that it couldn't be fit. When you are just getting started on Handi swap barrel sets, the easiest way to get it done is to just buy a whole second gun and then fit the two barrels to one frame. I have a barrel fitting tutorial that I can send to any interested party that expresses this via PM. It is best to have multiple SB2 frames on hand... I have three dozen and always have several options for a tight fit without doing fitting. For the most part fitting can be taken care of at three points; First the barrel lug hinge surface. Second the latch shelf. Third the barrel to breach face surface. Most commonly, the lug surface (hinge pin counterpart) might need material removed or built up. These are simple tasks that can be performed by anyone... They don't require hiring a gunsmith.

As for barrels, if you don't want to buy a whole second (or thrid, or fourth, or fifth) gun... Keep an eye on the EE, as they do come up from time to time.

If you do buy a whole second gun, get a synthetic model as there is a pretty good market for synthetic Handi stocks ($70) and for SB2 frames ($90)... And this will help recoup some of the initial investment.

For comparison, the total cost for a accessory barrel in the USA is $160-$170 with shipping both ways... You are not far behind to buy a whole gun and sell off the unwanted NEW parts... Several vendors sell new Handi's at $280 and have those on sale occasionally.

Here are a few examples of Swap Barrel Handi sets;

.30/30 & 7.62X39 Cocobolo Tipped;

.45/70 & .30/30 & 20 Gauge Stainless/Nickel Set;

.357 MAX & .44 Mag Walnut/Cocobolo Mannlicher Set;

.243 & .308 Ultra Forest Set;

I'd like to see more of these rifles and their accessories in Canada, such as stocks, proper sight bases etc etc. The sight bases from weaver suck, the factory ones are the way to go.

Anyway I digress... ;)

Anyone looking for H&R parts should aquaint themselves with "Numrich," they ship to Canada and carry every conceivable part. Google; "Numrich"... And then on the website search "NEF" to find the Handi rifle schematic showing all of the parts... Including stocks, spacers, transfer bars, trigger assemblies, etc... All of the usual suspects.

Its actually a .45/70 & .243 & 20 gauge set now... I coupled the nickel .30/30 barrel with a nickel .410 barrel in a Skinner peep sighted takedown set... Made more sense that way.

Did you get them nickel plated yourself or buy them already done from the factory?

You can buy Pre-'07 Handi's with an ejector or you can convert an extractor to ejector, but this requires some milling...

See a machinist/gunsmith... it is not that hard a job... you can get the ejector parts from Numrich (see above)... personally, I don't feel its worth it... not when you can hunt down an ejector barrel in any preferred caliber with a little patience.

I prefer extractors... for two reasons; First, it is a more positive extraction system... you are less likely to have a case jam in the chamber at an inopportune moment. Second, I'm too old to be crawling around in the bush hunting lost brass.

don't care about the brass just want a faster second shot, and hunting deer here on the last week of the season I would have take off my gloves
