hi, i bought a h&r in 223 and was wanting to buy a 308 barrel for it(with iron sights). 223 is nice for every thing below coyotes but 308 i can hunt everything down to racoons and jack rabbit (with fmj) then with sp and hp i can hunt all they way up to moose! i want iron sights because im a irons guy, scopes a nice and all but what good it a gun if your scope breaks and you have no backup sight.
thanks!

If you get a barrel you'll be able to assemble the gun with it yourself, but it may be unsafe. You need the headspace checked, at least, and that may reveal the need for some fitting. Shotgun frames can't take rifle barrels, rifle frames can take shotgun barrels. Details on the H&R website should enable you to figure it out, but basically, your .223 rifle frame should be able to take any other centrefire rifle barrels. E.g. my .223 Superlight has a .308 barrel, too.

However, that's moot if you can't get a barrel. Even in the U.S., H&R doesn't sell spare barrels because of the potential liability issues if they are fitted by an owner or an incompetent gunsmith. You send the gun to them and they fit the additional barrels you want. Unfortunately, they only do this for customers in the continental U.S. The extra paperwork for import/export isn't worth their while.

Workaround 1. Get one of the site sponsor dealers here who do imports, e.g. Questar, Prophet River, to get a U.S. dealer to send a Handi-Rifle to H&R to have all the barrels you may ever want fitted, then import it.

Workaround 2. Get lucky on the EE like I did. I don't know why some gunnut had a couple of spare barrels available a while ago, but he did, and I bought the .308 for my .223 Superlight, and it just happened to fit well enough.

Workaround 3. Write to the Gravel Agency (google will find them for you.) They are the Customer Service Agency in Canada for Remington, Marlin, H&R and they would like to import barrels and run the Barrel Accessory Program for Canada like H&R does in the U.S. The more of us who indicate we will be customers, the better their chances of persuading H&R to let them try this.

I once contacted a Service Agency (can't remember which) about a barrel/fitting... his number was $450, at a minimum

he suggested I buy another gun in the caliber I wanted, and THEN fit the barrel and sell the receiver... Or just keep two guns!

Go to the Graybeard Outdoors Forums, page down to H&R/NEF Center Fire Rifles and read "Barrel Fitting" in the FAQs. Checking head space is included. Fitting an H&R barrel, is not rocket science. Many of them jump right on the frame. I keep three spare frames, and invariably a new to me barrel (non-factory fit) will fit perfectly. Of my 16 Handis, none are shimmed or tweaked. If you paid a gunsmith around here to do it the charge would be about 40.00. It really is straight forward and simple.

I'm not concerned at all about the fitting, the tricky part is getting a barrel in Canada...

There a a lot of Handi owners in Canada and a lot of Canadians on the GBO forums.
Go to H&R/NEF Talk, then down to Want to Buy. You have to join the forum before you can post an ad, but that only takes a few minutes. Chances are you'll find what you're looking for and a lot of help if you need it. Some of the best Handi Experts are Canadian. Put "Want to Buy in Canada" in your ad.
Good luck,

Pete

Hi Pete, I've been on GBO since 2005, after I bought my Hunstman. They are like hens teeth around here, but I'd like to find 20 and 12 gauge rifled barrels.

I saw a pardner single shot rifled barrel on ebay this morning. More than likely it's in the US. A search for H&R Rifled Barrel in Sporting Goods should find it. I wasn't interested in it so I'm not sure if it was 20 or 12.

Those trade restrictions are a pain in the A$$. A guy was looking for an '06 barrel and I have one to sell, but it turned out he was in Canada.

If he has a factory .223 it is already on the SB2 high pressure frame. Under Remington, the new designation for the SB2 is CBA. He can add all the shotgun barrels and center fire rifle barrels he wants except the 10 ga and the belted magnums. H&R never made magnums in anything but pistol calibers. Rifle barrels CAN'T be reamed to calibers like 7mm Rem. Mag or .300 Win. Mag without possible disaster.
