Hi all,

Do any of you guys reload for a H&R Classic Buffalo in 45-70 Government and what load do you use. I would like one but according to H&R, they can't be reloaded with the Ruger#1 data, not even past the Marlin Lever loads  .

What are your load data and results for this firearm?

Thanks

That's the SB-2 action. It's also chambered for such rounds as the 308 and 243 (and the 500S&W), which are 60,000psi rounds. Some folks take that to mean that Ruger loads work fine, and they seem to have success with them.

I shoot 405's (cast) at 2000 fps and (jacketed) 1800 fps, as well as 300's at around 2350fps. No problems whatsoever, and lockup is still tight. Others have gone much higher. I can post load recipes if you want, but I use WC-735 surplus powder, and I'm not sure how much value my load data would have to you. Check the graybeardoutdoors forums, they have a fairly active NEF users forum.

But, I don't know why you'd WANT to go much higher, even with the 32" bbl, it's only an 8.5lb gun. It's not like you're gonna put a scope on it, or replace that classy hardened-steel buttplate with a limbsaver, right?

True enough. I havent heard the actual PSI,although I think its around 20,000 . From what I've heard they meant for them to throw big bore riding lead slugs at sub 1300 fps. I'll tell you,you cant go wrong putting a post on the castboolits sight . The boys there now there lead chuckers

This rifle is meant to look like a buffalo rifle and to not use Black Powder cartridges in it seems wrong, if you want horsepower get a modern gun like a Marlin or Ruger.......The 45/70 with properly constructed loads of cast bullets and black powder is capable of at least as good accuracy as smokeless if not better, due to no air space in loaded round. The ammo is capable of taking large game just like it did 130 years ago, it may have range limitations but most 45/70s do. There's just something special about the sound of a big BPCR cartridge at work.

AH yes the legendary break action sharps Mr. Marsten was heard to say. If you buy a ruger your actually getting an action closer to a buff gun but with strength

Right, cause the original 1860 frank wesson tip-ups weren't 'real' buffalo guns?

Are they or the falling block what typically springs to mind when we think of the buff hunt or the later 1000 yd matches of the day. I think if you were to ask 1000 shooters today 999 would say it was the falling block

A Marlin, yup, I have one ;) , a Model 1895 in 45-70 , love it :D she sure deliver enough power for big game hunting, but, can't shoot 500gr in it as it won't cycle the action  , so I would like to buy a one shot rifle, not too $$$ from which shooting 450gr and 500gr will not be a problem, at the same time, checking what this rifle is capable of achieving as what kind of load it can witstand.

No intention of putting a scope, it has the peep sight and a nice long barrel, she would not look nice scopped :runaway: . It's still in the project mode but the more it goes, the more it comes back as "the" next one :D .

Who makes affordable 45-70 strong action single shot?
