Just acquired an H&R Gamester in 12ga and was just curious about the safety of using steel shot in this gun. Gentleman I bought it from said he used it for waterfowl but not sure what ammo he was using. Measured the restriction and appears to be extra full. Was considering looking into possibly getting the old gal rigged up for some optics and making it more or less a dedicated turkey gun due to the choke. More than anything I'd like to do some hunting with this interesting old shotgun no matter what kind of hunting that may be.

If you are planning to use this for turkey, as long as the choke still looks good, I would just go ahead and use it. You wouldn't be shooting turkey with steel shot any way.. right?

You could always have a gunsmith take a look if you are not comfortable making the call on your own.

I was thinking waterfowl or turkey due to the muzzle restriction. It's not a screw in choke. Just wanted an opinion or two and possibly see if anyone out there has one of these old shotguns and what they may be using it for.
