Did H&R ever make the Handi-Rife in .44 Mag with a wood stock. Appears the only model available now has a synthetic stock. Does any other company make a single shot rifle in .44 Mag?

I have a H&R topper with 3 bbls. 20 Gauge, 30-30, and 22 Hornet.
It is no where near as pretty as hoytcannon's H&R's but still functional.
I hardly ever use it.

Nice guns Hoyt.

Do you ever actually shoot them?

Check the book buddy... how are you liking the .45/70? I just put another one together... it is alot like the one pictured below, but with iron sights and have it with a swap barrel .30/30... love the spire points in a .30/30 case.

Nice Guns Hoyt.
H&R are saying the (SB1-S44) frame will not except any other barrels with MAYBE the exception of the .357 There's a few synthetic .44's around but I've been looking for a wood stock.

Wood stock .44's were made, but your best bet is to buy the first one you see and stock it with whatever is your preferred stock... I have a wood H&R stock set for sale in the EE.

Also... SB1 frames are recommended for low pressure cartridges, shotguns, .44 Mag and .357. I have also used SB1 frames for .22 Hornet, .30/30 & 7.62X39. In general though, for centerfire cartridges, plan on building on an SB2 frame.

Hoyt are the swap barrel 30/30, 45/70 sets commercially available? Or did you machine them yourself from 2 different handis?

Not commercially available... I fit the barrels to a single receiver and then build a stock set.

Yes, they did. Someone advertised one for sale in the EE recently. It might still be there. Search.

No, they didn't... that was my build on a resale.

Are you referring to the .22 Hornet, .30/30 and 20 gauge set??? They made many 158 swap sets.

Very nice, that would be a good backup gun for a hunting party with lever actions.

The mannlicher model is also very impressive, do you use stock blanks or modify drop in sets?

I did a bunch of walnut stocks on a replicator, based on the Gunstocks Inc. model but carved with some changes and then capped with cocobolo. I did one presentation Grade Six Model with cocobolo forend, grip cap and self butt pad... an amazing piece that went to a fella at work as a retirement gift, it was mounted on a .357 Maximum. It is his preferred deer rifle, with which, he shot a dandy buck last fall.

Thanks for the info.

Did you have to cannibalize two handis or did you fabricate new barrels so they would fit on the action?

It is much easier to start with two complete guns... new barrels are far more difficult on a break action single than on a bolt action due to the barrel lug and timing the lock-up for perfect headspace... I have done a number of stubs to achieve different calibers (.260AI, .338;Fed and 9.3X74R), but stubs are time consuming and often cost prohibitive for this platform... rechambers on the other hand are very easy on break actions.
