H&R M4 Survival Rifle info

I'm looking for some information about the H&R M4 survival rifle, if anybody has any. a friends father recently passed and had quite a collection. I have yet to see the rifle in the flesh, but i've been told its in excellent condition. i have some concerns though. from the research i've done, they come in two barrel lengths. i don't know which one this happens to be. old guys and the things they hide in their closets...

anyways, i have my restricted license, so whatever its classified as, i'm sure i can still posses it. i'm just wondering if any of you know anything, or have one and know what its classified as and so on. price?

First of all sorry to hear of the passing of your friend's father. Not really knowing anything about the rifle I did a quick googling and it seems like an interesting piece,a tad impractical but cool none the less. It's got a pretty cool history as well being used by the U.S.A.F. during WW2 and it shoots the 22 Hornet. Probably restricted though being so tiny. Well done saving this piece from a possible trip to the smelter.

That rifle may not be classed as restricted, given that it is manually-operated (bolt-action from the pics I saw) with a collapsible stock.
There is the FRT list somewhere on CGN, and it is probably listed in there. Find that, and it should have the classification in it.

The M4 Survival rifles are normally restricted due to overall length with the stock collapsed. I have seen where guys weld a bar into the stock to try and de-restrict them, but that doesn't work. A longer barrel should work though.

The story I have heard on them was that when Canadair went to build the F86 Sabres here in Canada, the drawings sent up included the M4, which was stowed in the ejection seat. They were made by H&R in Drummondville Quebec, and are one of the last pieces of equipment to be found with the C/l\ on it. That mark had been officially discontinued from use sometime around 1948.

Magazines are just commercial H&R mags, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding spares. Numrich has spares for the overall gun, but being a military rifle, the parts are not available for export.
 
The H&R M4 is an interesting little gun, though not particularly pretty or fancy (think of a Sten). In the US they were issued as survival rifles for helicopters. Legal rifles that pop up in the south tend to bring ridiculous amounts of money, at least a few years back. I have seen them listed on auction sites for over $3,000! The don't tend to bring that kind of money up here. I bought one a number of years ago that had been carried on a tractor for decades to shoot ground hogs. With the original barrel they are restricted and I was able to register mine with no problems. If you need photos, let me know.
 
They're evil Class 3 firearms, Stateside. Too short here with or without the stock extended. Salter had one, made in Quebec, listed as restricted. Only came with 14" barrels in .22 Hornet. Lots of info on-line. One guy said he saw one that sold for $1900US. Value would be different here.
 
I've been told that it has the 16 inch barrel. I don't know if that makes it long enough to classify it as unrestricted. Considering they sell 12.5 inch shotguns as unrestricted on canadaammo...

The key to the M4's restricted status is the fact that it is less than 26" overall when the stock is collapsed and it can be fired in this manner. The 12.5 inch factory shotgun barrel goes into a firearm that is 26" or greater in length, therefore not restricted. A longer barrel will do the trick, but there will be some extra cost involved getting a gunsmith to make something up, machine it to fit, chamber, and headspace it. If you have your RPAL, you will probably need to get it verified then registered. Apparently the whiz bangs at the CFC can verify over the phone now.
 
I have seen a few of the M4s for sale but haven't come across the canvas bag yet. I would be interested in one for my rifle, if you have one for sale. Send me a PM. I actually looked at an M4 at the last Orangeville gunshow. The guy was asking $500 for it and said he had lots of interest until people found out it was restricted.
