I just saw the Basspro flyer and they have a H&R 45-70 rifle/scope combo for $319 or one in .44 mag for $329. I have a H&R/NEF in .17 and it is a great rifle . How about one in 45-70 or .44 ? anyone here own one and give your $ .02 ?

I have many H&R rifles... They are solidly built and nice to carry... Accurizing is a simple task also... All of mine are now wearing, handmade custom stocks or Boyd's Sterling thumbhole stocks... Similar to the Ultra models... Bass Pro told me last Thursday that H&R Handi rifles were not a regular item, that they just get them occasionally, so I am surprised they are in a flyer, unless they are a special buy?

I have one in 45/70 and it is a great cartridge, just have a peek at the price and availability of factory ammo first.

Save all the spent brass and reload.

Phone bass pro with the SKU number listed below the item i nthe flyer and make sure they actually have the item. I used to work there, the flyers are made by the corporate headquarters in MO. Often they would put a gun in a flyer and send us 2 of the things and they would last about 5 minutes. Sometimes there would send us 150 of them, it was just so hit and miss.

That makes sense... You won't find these in Vaughan, unless they just got them in...

Yes , the kid at the store told me they had 5-6 and sold them right away. He claims they are getting a pile more sent in 7-9 days.

after 3 month wait . Rifle shows up . Guess what wrong cal. (.44 mag?) and with no scope . They claim they are gonna get this rifle in but i am not holding my breath . This is the second time Bass pro has messed up my orders.

I want one in .44Magnum but I want the combination that comes with a 12gauge rifled barrel, too. I am happy with my N.E.F. Handi-Rifle (.223Remington and I got lucky in the EE and picked up a .308Winchester barrel that fit without any fiddling) and would have bought another when I thought I should have a .243 but the EE threw up something else interesting in that calibre.

H&R does not make a combo .44 Mag/12 gauge... But you can make it yourself... I finally found a 12 gauge 28" barrel with screw-in choke tubes, it came with an extended extra full tube for turkey hunting... The barrel locks up tight on many of my frames, including my .44 Mag... If you are interested, I have a new/unfired .30/06 barrel listed in the EE.

Check out the nef .17 hmr . one of the best rifles I own.

http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Combos/handislug.asp Model SC1-414, a .44Magnum and a rifled 12gauge slug barrel. Sometimes I hunt deer in a muzzleloader & shotgun only zone.

Because I have a .308 barrel for my Handi-Rifle, a .30-06 doesn't do enough different to make it appeal to me.

I just recieved an ultra varmint in .223, Just shot it today for the first time. I will be spending alot of time with this rifle. But now you guys are saying I might have the possibility to change barrels? I knew about the combo versions, but will other barrels fit on my gun?

For owners in the U.S. additional barrels can be fitted at the factory for a very reasonable cost if the receiver is sent in. They won't do this for us (too much paperwork crossing borders.) They don't sell the barrels separately, even to qualified gunsmiths, primarily because of fear of liability if the extra barrels aren't fitted properly.

It is possible but not common to find barrels for sale used in Canada (it happened to me, once,) or you can buy a whole new gun in a different calibre and take the barrel from that, but for the cost you might as well buy a whole new gun in a different calibre and not swap the barrel.
