H&R Single Shots any Good??

I have a Handi rifle in 223 with the heavy barrel ...been 20 years now ...1000s rounds down the barrel still shoots good ...but yes the trigger could be a lot better ...for a cheap varmint /plinking riffle you can’t go wrong …….

You may need a Phillips screwdriver to take off the forestock, can't remember. If not, remove forestock, open action and separate barrel from receiver.

Yes, it's one phillips screw holding the forestock on and with the forestock off you can just take the barrel off the frame. I can take that screw out with a flat blade screwdriver on my Swiss Army knife, but as with any instance of using the wrong type of screwdriver, if you do it often enough you'll damage the screw.

We had bad luck with a number of NEF rifles and not likely to ever buy another one. However, I would buy another H&R full wood stock in 30-30, I had one once and kick my own hiney for selling it. It too, need a hindge knuckle replacement at one point. But I miss that lil gal, prolly cuz she was sooooo sweet to look at, carry and shoot!

H&R singles are good value for the bucks. I had a .357 mag that shot great and now
own a .500 S&W one that I fitted with a Boyd's thumbhole laminate stock set.
This beasty is a very accurate rifle with the handloads I use and is just a very
fun gun to shoot. I can't comment on the .223 ones as I've not owned or tuned
one up yet.

I've owned several H&R's from 45/70 - .204 Ruger with a few in between.
All were accurate with one particular .270 and the .204 being tack drivers.
The triggers usually need to be taken apart and polished but that's no big deal and there are a few guides available on line.
Any good?
great bang for the buck imo.

Here's a list of barrel twist rates for these rifles: http://www.handirifle.com/FAQ's.htm#FAQ1

The problem (for me) with the 35 Whelen, is that it only has a 1:16 twist. I prefer a 1:12 so that I can shoot the heavier (i.e. 250gr +) bullets.

Similarly, the 223 is listed as 1:12 (a bit slow for my liking), with some recently being 1:9. The 22-250 is 1:14!

I have two Buffalo Classics (one rechambered to 45-90), a 500 S&W (oh my!), and a 357 Mag, rechambered to 357 Max. Like them all.

What the previous owner could do with hand loads in the 45/70 I bought off him.

Not the prettiest rifle, but, it's built like a tank and easy to maintain.

Everyone I have owned shot well, some with better triggers than others and the 38-55 Target Classic the fussiest to get to shoot well. Currently have a model 058 with a 22 hornet barrel and and a 22" 20ga barrel and if anyone has an H&R chambered in 357 or 35 rem or 35 whelen or 30-06 they want to part with....

Here's my H&R .500 S&W that I fitted with a Boyd's Pepper laminate stock.
The fore end took a bit of channel relieving to make room for the fat barrel,
but it's all good fun. She shoots great with 440 gr. cast boolits at 1100fps.
I mounted a Weaver K4 w/post reticle on 'er which is perfect for this beasty.

Hey Andy, is that the .357 mag. I sold ya that you punched out to .357 Max?
I like the concept! ;)

Had one in 204 with Hornandy ammo was deadly accurate. I let a friend at work use it once and he was totaly blown away buy the accuracy. Wish H&R would produce them in 7.62x54r & 7.62x39.

Indeed, also I'd love to see them made in 6.5x55 Swede. :)

Oh methinks 25-35 (6.5x52R) would be pretty slick.

I wonder how hard it is to reline or rebarrel one of these rifles with a custom barrel?

Yes it is!

BTW - it's now dressed in the same Pepper Laminate buttstock as you have on your 500 S&W, and wearing a Bushnell Tactical 10X40.

My 500 S&W has the original furniture (with 1 lb of lead shot in the buttstock), and a Red Dot.

Right on Brother!
I would guess the Max is a tight grouper at 100yds., plus the power
level would be only a notch below the .35 Remington.
Glad to see you enjoying the beasty!
