I just bought (brand-new) an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter. Model SBS980
It came with a scope. Does anyone know who makes this scope for this set-up? It is completely unmarked. There are no details about this scope on their website. It looks like a cheap Simmons maybe, but if it was, it should be marked at least somewhere as such. :confused:
Anyways, I didnt buy it for the scope and I must say, if you've never handled one of these suckers before, you must go out and buy one. Ive had a sh!t pile of guns, but this thing takes the cake for cool factor and a heavy barrel like I guarantee you've never seen before. I love this thing. It weighs about 900 pounds.

12 or 20? The 12 seemed to me to be best described as a boat anchor. Never handled the 20 yet. Let us know how it shoots with a full range report.
 
Outstanding gun. I've had one for years and it has always been my go-to slug gun. By far the most accurate slugger that I've tried, and I've tried a bunch. Mine came with a heavy, round steel bar fitted into the stock through-bolt hole, which made for good balance and helped with recoil. I took it out, fitted a Limbsaver pad, and never looked back. I love this gun. It's a 175-100 yard deer gun for sure. Mine loves Winchester Partition Gold slugs. Ammo experimentation is expensive but necessary to get the most out of the gun.

Can't help you with your scope, but it'll need to be of good quality to survive on there. My first cheapie scope, a Simmons, died after less than 100 rounds. My current Leupold Vari-X II 1-4x20mm has withstood over 500 slug loads, most of them full power, without problems. Your mounts need to be solid and properly installed, LocTite on the base screws. The Leupold is nice because it has long eye relief...a good feature on a kicker like this.

You probably are aware that the 12-gauge Ultra is built on the 10-gauge H&R frame, using a 10-gauge-sized barrel bored out to only 12-gauge bore. This leaves the extra-heavy barrel walls that characterize this gun. Personally, I can't wait to try the Tracker model, built on a 12-gauge frame, weighing about 6 pounds. :eek: Wheeeee!
 
I like the USH as well and will be hunting with it for the first time this fall. I have tried Remington corelokt, accutip, and SSTs with ok but not stellar results at 100 yds. I found the accutips grouped the best of these but stick in my chamber after firing. The ejector won't budge the accutips so they are not an option for me. I picked up some partition golds to try next.

I have had the same problem (difficult extraction) with a couple of H&R's, including the Ultra Slug. A little bit of Flitz metal polish on a tight chamber brush, chucked into a hand drill and spun in the chamber for a few minutes, solved it in every case. Makes the gun much more enjoyable, and costs almost nothing.
 
I own one in 20ga. The bbl is heavy and with optics that thing weighs 9+lbs. However, it is also very stable even when shot off-hand. Very accurate with Rem Accutip sabots at 125 yds although I haven't had a chance to take that out for Whitetails so far.
