I'm having some troubles with an H&R slug hunter that was purchased new.
It has had light primer strikes about 80% of the time. I tried fileing down the stop on the hammer with no change. It was then sent out to a local gunsmith who ground the hammer down some more. He also tweeked the transfer bar (his words) but the proublem persisted. It was then sent back to the store it was purchased from, they had it fixed under warranty. It came back with a new hammer and transfer bar. There is still no change, the gun only fires about 20% of the time the rest of the time there is just a very light dimple on the primer. Also this has happened with about 6 different types of ammo. If any experts out there can shed a little light on the problem I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm not familiar with this particular gun but I had a similar problem with a bolt action .22. The problem turned out to be with the trigger. A light pull on the trigger would result in a light strike due to the fact that the sear would ride on the bolt face as the bolt moved forward. A quick yank all the way back on the trigger would make it shoot every time. If there is some kind of a problem with the sear rubbing on the hammer as it comes down it may be causing a light strike. I would also check the pivot where the hammer spring engages. Polishing and lubing it might help.

With their transfer bar system you must be sure to hold back the trigger when firing, if you just lightly hold the trigger or release prematurely the energy from the hammer may not get completely transferred to the primer. You should hear a distinct click as you release the trigger after firing. In other words pull the trigger like you mean it

This. It's a common issue with Handi Rifles as we, if you don't have full follow-through with the trigger then you can end up with the transfer bar partially blocking the hammer.
