H&R ultra hunter 45/70 gvt

I have no experience with the .45/70 but plenty of people do and I suppose you know well enough why you want this calibre and how it will suit your purpose.

Now, the rifle. I have a N.E.F Handi-Rifle and like it a lot. I think they are good value for money and I really like the simplicity of the single shot break action and the compactness of the design. I've handled an Ultra and I can see why it commands a higher price than a Handi-Rifle, but whether it is enough better to justify the extra money is purely a subjective matter between you and your wallet. If you think it is worth it, I bet you won't prove yourself wrong. Enjoy.

Thank you for your reply. I used to own some other rifle in 45/70, but had to sold all of them. You know,ex wife, anyway! To which level can I reload the ultra hunter, shall I keep the load to Marlin level or can I go to the Ruger #1 level?

I'm not sure about reloading but Im going to be using leverlution in mine this season. :)

But for the record, the previous owner of my 45/70 H&R taped this to the buttstock...

^^^ That adds $1000 - $2000 to the price tag.

The general info is that the H&R is stronger then a Marlin but not as strong as a Rugar #1.

But then again how much recoil do you want to deal with?
Search google for more info on reloading for these rifles in 45/70, lots of info.

Thank you all
I used to own a 1895 and a #1. But as state, divorce and now the kid with me full time, I am on a tight budget. My usual load was a full one with H4198 under Hornady 350gr flat point. Was hard on both side. I will have love to get another Marlin, but with all the bad press around the recent production, it is hard to find a pre-rem used with a decent price.
I will try the H&R. I have read other forum, and most comment are real good. For now,Ineed to shoot, later, I will get a nicer one!

yup for the price you cant go wrong. On the marlin note i got 2 pre rem ony 45/70 and a 450M. the 450 is outstanding the 45/70 is a nice enough gun, but i jst picked up a 336y in 30-30. that is a slick little gun. havent shot it much yet but its might be my favorite soon enough. What im getting at is if your in the maket for a marlin take a look at some of the new production ones. you might find a jem
