I was at WSS today and finally was able to put my hands on a H&R Ultra hunter in 308, Has anyone got one of either brand ? Do you like them? Have you had any problems? What is the range like(Average and knowing that not every one is as good as each other.)? I am really debating about the idea of a single shot rifle, and a 30/30 Lever gun. Any advise good or bad is greatly apreciated. Thank you!!!

Some H&Rs come through the shop and are problematic, they open on firing, or don't open when they should. For a varmint gun or second gun this may be O.K., but for serious hunting, there are lots of reliable, accurate, single shots out there! A used Ruger #1 or Browning '85 would be good if on a budget....I don't think that just because it is a single shot it can be inexpensive. Single shots usually have moving parts that require good fitting/machining, and I think that if my budget was limited, I would opt for an inexpensive bolt gun instead of an inexpensive single shot.

I have an older H+R SS in 30-30 that I picked up as a trainer for my boys to drive home the importance of making the first shot count. It is MOA day in and day out .Has taken many deer and one moose.I wish seeing we are Canadian and all they would offer it in .303 Brit as rimmed cartridges seem to have less problems than the others.Best $100 I ever spent! I have a Handi-Rifle in .223Remington. It's a Superlight, so synthetic stock, no iron sights. I've had none of the problems some people report as typical. I like it a lot. I'll probably eventually get one in .308, maybe an H&R Ultra, for deer hunting. The Enfield No4 I love to use now for that is getting heavier as I age.

Everything gets heavier with age!!! The mts get taller.I bought a deer hauler this year in Post Falls ID so I'm done dragging deer on bare ground.I find myself gravitating back to sensible hunting round like the .250 Savage etc............instead of the big magnums.Although I did poke a mule buck with a .54 blackpowder this year.He was askin for it...................Harold

What kind of experiance do people have with the Remington SPR 18 as well? I forgot to add that to the original topic list. I am not sure why I am so interested in the single shots, but they seem to intrieg me, I guess it might be a way to slow down my reactions and make me a better shot. I don't know, Thanks for the advise so far.

I have a 30-06 NEF with a really short barrel. Phew! It is loud. I put a scope on it, but haven't used it much. I bought it to play with, not necessarily hunt with. I am planning to use it with light lead bullets and pistol powder for gophers.:D I also bought an NEF .410 this Fall. Haven't even fired it yet. :p:p

The more I hear the more i want to know about these. I am now thinking of a 243 for both myself and for a starter rifle for my 10 year old Daughter,( She said she wanted it in pink:rolleyes:) IF I get a 243 what kind of valosity can I expect? And does anyone have 1 of these rifles in 243 that would like to share some of what they think about the load for deer and yoties

I had a NEF 22-250 that I sold to a friend. It was a very good shooter. Was the action not supposed to open after every shot? All in all it was a nice gun.
