H&R Ultra Varmint Fluted

I guess it all depends in what you call accurate,,If 1 1/2''-2''moa is accurate enough for ya ,,buy it,,I ownwed a H&R ulta varmint in 243 win, heavy barrel,,and that's the grouping I got,,traded it for a rem 700 sps varmint heavy barrel, and have never looked back,,If you have your heart set on a 223 rem and want to save some $$$,,get a stevens 223 rem,,,I own one and am extremely happy with it,,a super accurate gun for a little over $300,,,,BUT THATS JUST MY OWN OPINION,,,I"m sure you should get some more responce

All depends on the one you get. I too have an Ultra Varmint in .243, with a heavy barrel, and with handloads it will shoot into 1/2 an inch at 100 yards. The only problem I've had is every now and then a case won't extract, the extractor seems to stick, a little push with a cleaning rod and away it goes again. I'm quite happy with what I got for the price.

I had a H&3 17hmr. Was very accurate an short and easy to pack. The trigger was horrible and like all those rifles the scope is mounted to high for my tastes, so i sold it.

im not an accuracy nut, but 1.5-2" accuracy would be unacceptable to me in a varmint rifle.

if you just want cheap accuracy then buy a Savage or Stevens, or even one of the new Savage Edge or Marlin XS7s, for $300-400.

They can be very accurate with a little tweaking. There is another site you can go to get a bunch of tips for acurizing these little rifles. I have one in .204 and it one of the most accurate fifles I own. It can shoot 5 shot groups at 3/8 in. at 100 yrds if I can do my part. Triggers are not a big deal to take apart and hone and give you a very nice trigger. They're not for everyone but if you don't mind taking a little time I think you would like it. You might be lucky and get one right out of the box.
Bushman, is your an ejector or extractor. If it is an ejector you can do two thing that should help.
1. You can try and polish the chamber. Make sure your brass doesn't have have any lube left on them.
2. Take the ejector apart and put a BB in front of the spring. This puts a little more pressure on the spring and will act more like an extractor.
Hope this helps.

My mistake, mine has an ejector, not an extractor. I will try your suggestions, thanks for the help. It's a sweet little rifle, but will be even better if I can fix that little gremlin!

That the one. There is a ton of info and tips just for handi rifles. Everything from a simple rubber washer under the forend to cleaning oil off the latch to trigger jobs.

I have one in .204 and it's very accurate with 32gr Vmax/Win748 or IMR3031. Winchester factory ammo also gave good accuracy. I have done nothing to the gun to improve accuracy outside cleaning it often. It's a good, cheap gun that'll do 1" at 100 yards repeatedly.

HR Ultra Varmint

Well it sounds like some guys have purchased a few that are accurate.
I purchased a 223 when they first came out and after serveral different hand loads and factory ammo I had no luck ( maybe 2" ).
Sold it and bought a 700 VLS.
Good luck and post the feedback if you decide to purchase one.
Cool little guns!

gps,
You might find the accuracy improve if you don't clean it as often. Most handi's like to be shot dirty. Only cleaning when accuracy starts to go south.
