H S Precision Rifles

How good are H S Precision rifles for hunting purposes? I like the 3 position safety, the detachable magazine and they look good with a practical synthetic stock and at about 7 pounds (the one I have been looking at) it is a good all around rifle weight especially for long hikes. They advertise 1/2" accuracy at 100 yards for 30 cal or less. However, this is for a specific bullet type and weight fired under ideal conditions.
For those of you who own one of these rifles, or who have used them at the range or hunting, how well do they perform and do you recommend them? An alternative is to have one made up by any one of a number of good gunsmiths, many of whom are our sponsers?

I shot an HS STR in .308 Win. It was shooting 1/2 MOA with the first load I tried in it so I'd call it a pretty accurate gun. It only has a 20" bbl and was fairly light and easy to move around with. I don't see why it wouldn't make a great hunting rifle.

I've set up a couple of Rem. 700s with HS Precision stocks, and I think they're first rate quality.

Were I to go all out for a premium rifle, HS Precision would probably be my first choice...and likely considerably less dough than having a custom rifle built. Have heard and read nothing but great reports about them.

I've had one for 25 years ( back when they were in Prescot AZ) . It shoots very well and when the stock cracked at 23 years they replaced it promptly. Just to be clear mine is the modified Rem 700 they used to use not their own action.

I have a prohunter lite, 325wsm, bought it about 2 1/2 years ago. Must have 500ish rounds through it now. It meets the 1/2moa guarenty with several handloads. To be honest I have never fired a factory load in it to say what it will do with them. Mine shoots 5 into under 1/2moa if I do my part. The teflon coating seems to be pretty tough, I have only put a little wear on it where it rubs on my pack (after several multi-day packtrips)

I have a couple customs, and I decided to go HS as this rifle was very close to what I had speced out for a custom, and I only had to wait weeks instead of months/year. The only gripe I have is the recoil pad is hard, and not as good as a limbsaver or similar. It feeds just fine with the wsm, and I like the 3 position safety. A few friends have tried the rifle and do not like the skinny grip, and the straight back nature of the stock. But they still shoot it well and say that for a 6.5 pound rifle it does not kick bad.

Is it as good as most customs - likely it is. It is better than a custom - no.

I had one and did not like it.
3000.00 rifles should not have the sort of problems associated with 300.00 rifles.

bought a PHL in .243. shoots great like they claim too do. But the stock reminded me of a lever action, way to straight back. Also when I tried loading longer bullets they were too long for the mag if you wanted them just to be sitting off the lands. Picked up a Sako A7 for a third the price with pretty much the same results down range

I have a .308 in an HTR H-S rifle..... this rifle is an honest 3/8 MOA rifle...with 175 SMK's it would hold under 1" at 200 yards.

I would really recommend an H-S rifle to anyone. They have a 1/2 MOA accuracy garantee. And all rifles under .30 cal will do this with premium factory ammo or reloads.

I have built a few custom rifles on an H-S stock and bottom metal and all componets they make are of top quality.

Josh and the boys at H-S build some really nice rifles. They had a great selection at the SHOT show this year. I think that any calibers over .30 they will guarantee 1 moa!!!

I will say this about an H-S.............don't hesitate if you want one!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!

Well, I've been happy with my HS stuff, but I have to mention a friend of mine who ordered one from HS, had it delivered, and as he was doing load development, the barrel proceeded to unscrew itself. They had forgotten to torque the barrel in. Eventually the rifle went back to HS and it was rectified, but it took about a year of shipping back and forth (he lives in Italy). Overall, though, I still think they build a good rifle. - dan
