H1000 + 300 win and .270?

My buddy, is going to Lewis port , to buy 2lbs h1000. He's read that H1000 can be used in both these , with good results. Any body think differently?... Thanks
 
Not sure about 270, but it works good in 300. I would grab a lot more than 2 lbs if the price is right. Varget is now twice the price it was two years ago.
 
Your buddy is right about H1000 and the 300 but For the highest velocity achievable, H1000 has too slow a burn rate for the .270 and is a piss poor choice...Unless you are going to be loading up with a 180gr bullet, which is a rare thing to do with the .270...Something like H4831 is a much better choice...You sacrifice a lot of performance if you try and use the "one size fits all" approach when it comes to choosing one powder for multiple calibres.
 
I don't know about the last post with H1000 and a 270 but in my rifle 64.0 grains H1000 and a 130 TTSX shoot extremely well and fast. Decent ES also.

Yes H1000 will get the 270 bullet out the end of the barrel at a moderate velocity...If you don't mind cramming all that magnum powder into a standard size case and still give up over 150+fps that a powder more suited for the job will do...That's great that you are getting such performance out of your 130gr bullet with such a slow burner but it is not typical...When you say fast...If you don't mind, how fast and what length barrel?

Well, if 3100 plus is "moderate velocity" with the 130 in a 24" barrel, I wonder what you class as "fast" in the 270 with the same bullet.

I very much doubt he will be giving up any 150 fps because he is choosing to use H1000.

Like I was saying, if a guy is getting high velocity out of the 270 with H1000 loaded with medium weight bullets...This is not typical performance...Never found I could get enough of the slower burning powders in the case to get the pressure high enough to even break 2950fps...Mind you my 270 only has a 22" barrel....When I load up with 4831 I can easily get 3150fps...I also see by looking over much of the new load data on the web, that Hodgdon has changed there published charge weights and performance values on a lot of powders...Almost like they are trying to steer guys to use certain "HODGDON" powders...It's looking like more so then ever, a guy has to take the published data with a grain of salt and sort it out on his own.

I'm thinking the reason the manufacturers are pushing up the published performance achievable with these slower powders while detuning load data on other faster powders, besides sales is because they know Joe Blow can't get enough of these slower powders in his cartridge to get in any trouble...Heck they make vehicles that parallel park and brake automatically for the city folk nowadays too.
