Hello, just bought a rifle in .270, looking to cook up some decent loads with 90grain tnts, and 130 grain interlocks. I have h4198 on hand anyone got an idea where to start? Can I use data from .30-06 for .270 with the same bullet weight? also, anyone have experience with Varget? Thanks, bottle neck cartridges are new to me so, any help is appreciated. Skokie.

If not, may I recommend you purchasing at least two.
Followed by a thorough reading of the first couple or 4 chapters of each book.

Thanks, I do own a couple and have tried finding this powder in the data on the hogdon site but havent been able to. Also, my question regarding Varget is not about data but general experience with accuracy and different bullet weights. So I figured a quick post on here might yield results. But, again, no results, just people asking me if im an idiot or not. No, im not, thanks though.

I found Varget was great for plinking loads in my .270, very cheap to shoot. I generally use H4831 for 130grain and heavier, and H4350 for bullet lighter than that. I have used varget in the past because it is very cheap. H4831 and H4350 are both about $50/lb after tax around here and Varget is under $30/lb after tax. I was able to achieve MOA loads using Varget, but wasn't able to get under that.
Compare loading a 130 grain bullet in the 270 with H4831, H4350 & Varget
130gr bullet with 60 grains of H4831 = $0.42 powder per round
130gr bullet with 54 grains of H4350 = $0.38 powder per round
130gr bullet with 48 grains of Varget = $0.20 powder per round
Those charges are the most accurate with their respective powders in my 270 Savage.

4198is a very fast powder. It would be ok for cast bullets in a 270, but not jacketed ammo.
The standard go-to powder in 270 is 4831. If you are going to stick to the lighter bullets, 4350 would be a good choice. Varget is a bit fast.

yes, i know its a fast one, but its all i have until i get to LeBaron on friday, so i just want to cook up a few rounds to check the scope zero, general accuracy..etc. I think i will try to get some 4831 and some 4350. thanks.skokie.
Just got in from LeBaron, all they had was Winchester 760, which doesnt look too bad. 59.0 grains give you 3585 fps with a 90 gr, so Im gonna load some with 90 gr tnt's and kill some yotes, ill let you know how it goes thanks again.
Not trying to be the ahole here, but maybe you should read your question before you post it? My initial thoughts as well is you have very little knowledge of reloading if you are asking about using 30-06 data for a .270. Suggesting you get or read a manual is a very reasonable response based on the wording of your question. I haved use Varget in 22-250 & 243 with good results.

I would suggest you use powders listed in loading manuals. If you don't see a certain powder listed in a couple different manuals its not suitable for the cartridge. W760 is a very suitable powder for 270 Win.

I tried H414 and Varget with 90, 100, and 110 grain varmint bullets (speer HP and Hornady V-max) and got much better results with varget. Once the bullet weight goes to 130 grain the H414 was the better choice.
I cant remember how much varget I was using off the top of my head but I worked all the way up to a maximum listed load and had those little HP's screaming along nicely. My favorite is the Speer 1447, Huge hollowpoint and flat base makes gophers explode out to 300 yards regularly!
One thing I do like about Varget was how clean it left my barrel, Using wipeout I seem to get more copper fouling than I do powder residue.
