I built a bunch of loads for my 221 Fireball and 300 Whisper on H4227 and now of course I can't seem to find any.

There is tons of IMR 4227 out there but my understanding from the published load data is that the IMR version is a fair bit different.

So anyone know of a source for H4227?

H110 is not 4227. IMR and H are different but if I couldn't find H I would buy a can of IMR back off a grain and work back up. My bet is you will get just as good a result. There is likely to be as much difference batch to batch in the H4227 as there is switching to IMR. When I get a good load I tend to buy 8 or 10 pounds of the same batch of powder so I don't have to fiddle with the load every time I open a new pound.

I would send Andrew at Higginson an email or call him. Could be a typo error or emission that it is not listed. If we don't tell him he won't know. On their site they say they just reveived a shipment. Can't hurt to ask.

In the rifle powders ADI in Australia makes most of the stick powders for Hodgdon. I don't think any ball powders though. In any case here is ADI's burn rate equivalency chart. Keep in mind that even if burn rate is the same, the amount you use is not necessarily the same.

I could not find H4227 at the Hodgdon site, but did see H110. I'm wondering if it has been discontinued??

Vihtavuori on the other hand rates H4227 a little slower than H110. Here is the Vihtavuori chart, so it may give you some other ideas on what could be used.

Hodgdon has discontinued several powders. H4227 & H870 are two of my favoritesthat got dropped, fortunately i have a life time supply of H870. H4227 not so good. It was dropped in 08 i think so chances of finding old stock are slim.

Well at least I know the answer now .... even if it doesn't make me happy. :(

Judging from the Vhitavuori burn rate chart I think that Lil Gun might be the best choice for me. It was a powder I was considering trying anyway and it seems to be the closest to H4227.

Looking at the Hodgdon data centre, Lil Gun produces much higher velocitites with less powder than IMR4227 which pretty much seals the deal for me.

I use Lil"gun exclusively now in my 221 FB and the Hornets and Bee too. Six Hornets I have all shoot exactly the same load, 12.6 grains of Lil'Gun, Federal Small Pistol priner, WW or Privi brass and 40 grain Blitzking bullets. No other powder I have tried will do that.

In the 221, I have had very good results using it under 40 grain Blitzkings, which you can get over 3500 fPS with a 26" barrel, or under the 50 grain SPSX by Hornady, which you can get over 3100 fps.I use CCI Small rifle BR4 primers and Remington cases.

It is far superior to anything else I tired in them for both speed and accuracy, as well as consistency. I buy it in the big Kegs because I use so much of it shooting gophers.
