I just came across one of my favorite powders. I thought I ran out of it a few years ago.

WC852 = H450

I had placed a couple of boxes of this powder WC852 on the shelf above their normal spot and like all shelves something else ended up covering the details on the box.

This should be enough to last until the end of my days.

It's a great powder. It was discontinued a few decades back.

In general terms it's just slightly slower than H4831, depending on the lot#, or W785/WMR powder.

It's one of my favorite powders but is a tad sensitive to cold or heat extremes, which I no longer hunt or shoot anymore.

It's pretty much H4831 in BALL FORM. This is a replacement for me for the jug of H4831ssc that I'm close to running out of.

It was a very nice surprise indeed.

I still have appx 5 lbs of H-450. Great powder, works great in my 270 Weatherby with 130-150 gr bullets. Lot I have is pretty much on par with IMR7828 as far as burn rate goes.

Nice I just got 2lbs of Norma 204 and a half lb of Norma 205 also in that burn range. Only tried in my swede so far but should be good in creedmoor.

Still have an 8 pound jug of 852. It is good powder. I bought it in a 64 pound order from Jeff at GI Brass when I was working in MT. $320 if I remember correctly, should have bought more. - dan

Tom Higginson sent me 42 lbs of it for testing in a dozen different cartridges. There were three different lots.

Now I remember why I set this powder aside. Usually, I made notations on the boxes, not in this case.

The lot I have in these last two boxes is a slightly faster lot than the other two boxes. It's closer to IMR4831, but still very useful.

I loaded some up with two grains less than the old recipe in my 270 Winchester and two of my 280 Remington rifles. Those two grains aren't much but it's very close to the maximum in all three rifles.

I wasn't going to mention this until I saw your post.

I know you understand burn rates and how much powders varied from lot to lot back in the day.

I just wanted to give you a heads up about the burn rates. I'm likely going to reduce the charges a few grains more, just to see if it shoots as well. If it does, the velocity difference won't be noticeable, but case life will be better.

Agree. I usually retest my loads when I switch jugs. As you noted, surplus powders vary some from batch to batch, more so than commercial powders. - dan
