I got given a few pounds of this powder.
I was looking for any data points/experience people have using this very slow powder in they're rifles.
I was looking to load .30-06 and .270 hopefully in 150gr .30 and 130gr .270
Chrono and accuracy data would be greatly appreciated.
Dont want these 3 lbs to go to waste....

From the 2018 Hodgen Annual.
For .270 using 130gn HDY SP IMR 4831 51.0gn - 2759fps 55.8gn - 3002fps
For 30-06 lightest bullet listed using IMR 4831 is a 175gn SIE HPBT 57.0gn -2535fps 61.5C - 2719fps

I've loaded both with 4831SC. The 30-06 was for the wife's cousin. It was an accurate load, but I can't help with the recipe as it was about 10 years ago. He really liked it. I used it in my .270 and it was very accurate with both 130 and 150 grain bullets. But again this was close to 10 years ago, and I didn't keep the recipe, and didn't have a chrono.

Looking at my post, I realize I haven't been any help at all. All I can say is: it is a very good powder in both these caliber, and has been used for years. Google is your friend on this, as there are a lot of proven recipes out there - tried and true.

H4831 is a fine powder for the .270. My go-to load is 60 grs. under a 140 gr. Accubond. This is a hot load. I've tried using O'Connor's recipe of 62 grs + 130 gr. bullet, but it's too hot for my rifle. I use 58.5 gr. for the 150's. The 140's clocked 3000 fps, the 150s- 2880. That's from a 22 inch barrel. Chrono was on the fritz when I was playing with the 130's so I don't have any data for it.

I think 4831 is a little slow for the .30/06 and light bullets. Useable, perhaps, but I think you'll get more velocity out of 4350, IMR or H. H4831 is better suited to heavier bullets, i.e. 220 gr.

Thanks for the recommendation s
I loaded up a bunch of 165gr Hornady BTSP that I managed to find data for in old manuals and the last Lyman edition.
Took 60gr and was compressed but should do a respectable 2830fps.
I'm not the smartest for working up loads, I just load near max and if there's something wonky with the chrono readings I back off.
I'm not keen on 180s but ralize this is not the most optimal or efficient powder for lighter bullets. You can get the same peerformance with 10 grains less powder of a faster variety.
But I was given 3 pounds of the stuff so had to put it to good use.

Next experiment is 130gr .270. probably back off O'Connor's load a bit.

H4831 is the "go to" powder in a 270 isnt it?
I use the hornady 130 gr sp with 59.0gr H4831. this load shoots .6" consistently and is just under 3100 fps in my old savage.
Also it kills really well.

Didn't hodgedon start with war surplus 20mm shells each containing several pounds of 4831?

Pretty much the standard and available powder immediately after WWII.

There are a lot of calibers more ideally suited to H4831. Really rather slow, would be ideal for magnum calibers. How about selling it, use the cash to buy a better powder. Whomever gave you that 3lbs did it to help you, that would be helpful.
