Hi everyone,
Who has any real experience swapping loads between these two powders?

I've got a Fclass rifle in 6.5-284 that shoots bugholes with the short cut version........but i've got two pounds of the regular 4831 just wondering if i can swap without changing the load ?:nest:

Any comments welcome,
Thanks in advance.

I was under the understanding that 4831 is ALL short cut now, so they just took SC off the label.

Thats how I understood it anyways.

EDIT: It is not so, I take it back. Was too lazy to research out this false claim.

The short cut version definitely has smaller granules and meters alot better....................was just wondering if that might change the load density and pressure curve or anything that matters?

Getting worried because i'm shooting provincials this weekend and a little paranoid to change loads now

I just looked on the website.

H4831SC - Ballistically, this Extreme Extruded powder is the exact copy of H4831. Physically, it has a shorter grain size, therefore, the designation SC or short cut. The shorter, more compact kernels allow the powder to flow through the powder measures more smoothly, helping to alleviate the constant cutting of granules. With the smoother flow characteristics comes more uniform charge weights, while the individual grains orient more compactly, creating better loading density.

I think the only difference would be you would compact non-sc if you were shooting a hot load and the SC runs out smoother from the powder measure. Personally I doubt there would be any difference on paper.

I know I switch from non-sc to SC when it came out and thats all I noticed. It was just easier to dispense.
Don't take my word for it though, I can't say for 100% sure.

if 4831sc is doing what you want , go buy a pound of it and reload what you need for the weekend .

after your shoot , work up some loads with the regular 4831 and see if there is any difference .

for hunting rounds i would say the load information would be identical / directly interchangable .( myself i'd still make a few rounds a couple grains lighter and fire them off first just to make sure i'm not into a over pressure situation , but i also do this with a fresh can of powder too )

but for trying to get teeney tiny groups on paper ........ the only way you will fnd out is to load some rounds up and fire them off .

you could also look at it this way , the 2 pounds of 4831 is what 60.00- 70.00?
so to save buying a pound of 4831sc , your willing to possibly put yourself at a disadvantage this weekend ?

Trust me i'm thinking the exact same thing!

I think it's this or i think it's that

You have 2 issues to deal with .
1. Short cut VS the regular
2. Different Powder LOTS.
I have found that switching to SC required a reduction of .5 grs to achieve the same velocity. SOOOOOOOO a crony is a good way to solve the issue of switching.
Take care and enjoy. Bill.

I suspect he has the same problem that most of us do: Finding the damned stuff in time and in quantity. WJ is a great shooter and a talented reloader.

Good news boys!

I found another 3 pounds of SC and will be using that this weekend!!!!:dancingbanana:

I will make up some loads with the regular stuff and keep you guys posted. Thanks for all the advice and kind remarks.

O2fish.........stay on your target this weekend eh.......no "crosfire" will be tolerated haha:kickInTheNuts:

Great... we Canadians have had our butts handed to us by Scandinavians in hockey, now you're gonna do it in shooting as well! :D

Don't choke on the lutefisk

Uff Da!
