just like the title asks, I have IMR 4895 for my .350 rem mag. 200 gr hornady,

I can find data for the h 4895 but not IMR 4895 are they the same

i am just getting back into reloading after about 10 years away from the bench so I could use some help

thanks...

IMR 4895 is just a bit faster. Reduce your starting loads 1% to 2% and you'll be fine. H4895 loads can be used for low velocity/pressure loads with good success. I'm not sure if this is safe with IMR 4895.

This is another example of why you should start low and work up loads. I have three burn rate charts that show IMR 4895 two steps faster than H4895. The new Hodgdon chart shows it one step slower. Manuals generally show a slightly lower maximum charge for IMR 4895, yet the opposite is listed in the example above.

in a particular rifle, quite possibly true. in another, could be the opposite, and lot # to lot #, everything changes

start low work up yada yada

that is why i come to the experts... I found the listing for the IMR 4895 for hte rem 200grain.. as long as i drop the amount of powder a little will i be okay to use this info on the 200 gr hornady?

and thanks for all of the help...

They are NOT the same. IMR is a bit faster than Hodgdon. Don't try to import reloading data from one powder to the next - asking for big trouble! Check reloading data on line or at the local gun shop, good luck and safe loading!

Now that this one's settled maybe we should move along to IMR 4198 and H4198.
Hmmmm. 47L slow lot, Win. 760 and H414 should be worth pages and pages of illuminating discussion, all of which will prove again that there are errors within single manuals and disagreements between different suppliers manuals.
I read recently that IMR and H 4831 are interchangeable, but I know a guy that came close to destroying a pre '64 M70. He was using Hodgdon's, and picked up a can of IMR thinking they were the same. Being a slow learner he endured a few stuck cases followed by a head separation. He thought the rifle was hooped, so he gave it to a friend to play with. The friend enjoyed many more years of shooting that nice old 264 Win. mag. by going back to square one with the handloads and employing a bit of that scarce commodity common sense.:)

I have about 6 pounds that I'm guarding carefully :50cal:

Re the H & IMR 4831, I have a wonderful memory, but it's very selective. I remember the comment vividly, but discarded the source right out of my head immediately.:) I'll scrounge around and see if I can find it again just for laughs.

Interestingly, the preparers of the latest Sierra reloaders manual comment that IMR4895 and H4895 happen to be interchangeable [more or less] - but they still say for safety, "we recommend that loads be used exactly as they are shown in the manuals with no substitutions."

Good advice right from the horses mouth....
I've interchanged them with zero issues, mind you my loads are not dancing on near maximum pressures.
