IMR 4895 is made in Canada and distributed by Hodgdon. H4895 is made by ADI in Australia, where they call it AR2206H. The IMR powder is a bit slower than the H4895.

For some reason, for me IMR 4895 always seems outshoot the H version. My hyper experienced shooting buddy always seems to find the opposite. Go figger.

To be honest the reason why I ask is my reloading manual says "4895" for 30-06, I've been using IMR4895 for years assuming that's what it was, I never even knew there was a H4895 till today and then I thought "uh oh, have I been using the wrong stuff"

Regardless, IMR4895 shoots great, I've got a nice load worked up.

You can use the correct amount of either H4895 or IMR 4895 in the 30-06.

They are different powders (but they are very, very similar).

H4895 is made in Australia, by ADI Australia Defense Industries, where is is called AR-2206 (or AR-2206H? look it up....).

IMR 4895 is (or at least was) made in Canada, in Valleyfield, Quebec.

H4895 has shorter grains and meters better.

H4895 is either a bit slower than IMR4895 (about 1 grain for a .308 with a 155 grain bullet), or perhaps we're willing to use hotter loads now than what we did 15 years ago.

I have shot lots of both, and have managed quite a few bullseyes at 1000 yards using ammo made with IMR4895, H4895 and Varget.

I have found the "H" versions of a few similar powders to produce slower velocities with identicle weights. (H4198-IMR4198, H4895-IMR4895). Thay all work fine, but I find the hodgson powders to give me a better loading density when practical max pressures are met.

I have not noticed a big difference in grouping potential between them.

Thats just my observations.

I bought IMR4895 and was thinking H4895. Anyhow, the IMR 4895 has been working for me and I have stuck with it for a few pounds now, (308 in AIA No4. Mk4)

IMR4895
IMR4895 stands for Improved Millitary Rifle powder.
It's the original powder using in 30-06 cartridge for M1 Garand and is an excellent powder.

H4895
Hodgdon bought surplus of this powder and sold it as "old H4895" years ago.
The current Hodgdon "new H4895" is an better flowing, less temperature sensitive powder of similar burning rate as that of IMR4895.

In short, IMR4895 is a great powder but H4895 is somewhat better if:

1. you use a volumetric powder measure (flow better)
2. you shot long range in cold temperature (less temperature sensitive)

I'm a big fan of Hodgdon Extreme Powders (Varget, H4350, H4831) but you can send me your IMR powder and I'll dispose of it safely

IMR give a little more velocity, i just use the same data and substract .5 gr if i use IMR just as a precaution, they are the same... JP.

In my experience IMR 4895 is batch to batch very consistent. I have seen H4895 in at least four different colors ranging from silver, to green, to grey and black and they all had different burn rates.
