H4895 Colour

Hello All;

I don't have any experience with the Hodgdon line of powders, for some reason I have pretty much stuck with the IMR series. I have a 1 pound plastic can of H4895 that has been in my stock for about 2 years and was probably opened for the first and only time about a year ago. When I went to use it today, I noticed that the granules were a pale sort of green colour, not the dark grey I am used to. The smell seems to be the normal nitro odour.

My questions are; is this normal? is the powder safe to use? if it is safe to use, do the standard loads apply?

I believe the grey in IMR is graphite. the green hue in H series is normal. If it still smells sweet...make it go boom. Suggest you visit the hodgdon site for normal load development. Cheers.

I use H4895 in several rounds, it always looks like that.

If it comes out looking red with a bit of reddish dust you have a problem, a different smell as well. As for other colors it can change with different batches as the manufacture adjusts things for each batch hard to notice it though.

Most of the Hodgdon "Extreme" powders are not black, but are a paler color,
like you are descibing.
Perfectly normal, carry on.
