H870 for .223?

I'm waiting on some CFE223 and cme across a lb of h870. Could this be used with .223 caliber or should I just wait for the CFE. ( I'm going stir crazy with cabin fever)....:)
 
H870 is far too slow for the 223.

That's a great (and long discontinued) powder for large capacity magnum cartridges.

I thought it was old, as the guy has it sitting on a shelf with some odd projectiles, 6.5, 8 mm , 7.5 mm and such. Also a couple cans of black powder .:) Would it work for 300 magnum then?
 
870 is very slow. It is ideal for a 300 Mag necked down to 243....

No good for 223.
ya ,that's what I figured. I did some internet search and knew it was discontinued. As my books are new and current,thought there might be some info on this in the older manuals. you never know what some of the reload ers ,who have been at this a long time, may know. This was probably on the shelf ,for a long time.
Anyway ,just bored and asking questions is all... Thanks

I can't speak for the man but I will say this. If you looked at the burn rates of all the powders used in loading .223 Rem. and then compared it to that of H870 or even did some simple research on the typical use of that powder, you'd have come to the realization that it is completely unsuitable for small rifle case capacities.
 
I have a old manual that shows 85 gr for a 180gr bullet at 2850 fps and 83 gr with a 220 gr bullet at 2800 fps in the 300 Win mag
after researching , it seems it was a very good powder , but now , since it's not available anymore, it's not worth buying . Thanks though.

Your right , I didn't do much research, just through a question out there, more out of curiousity than anything else.Ive got load data for Calibers and powder that were not listed in my manuals. I wasn't going to just load em up and go shooting.

If you knew someone who has Quickload, maybe you could get them to do a run on H870 in the .223 Rem. to see what it would look like? For ####s & gigles of course. I highly doubt you'd make anywhere near max pressure and the fireball out the muzzle would be spectacular! :D

My own thoughts are that it would not generate enough pressure to ignite properly, and the fired primer would simply push the powder and bullet a few inches down the bore.
