H870

Haven`t tried it but Hodgdon list US 869 as a ball powder for over bore magnums. Retumbo looks good as well if you don`t need a ball powder. I have a large supply of H870 all the same lot, just what you needed to hear right.:p

I have used WC860 and WC872 as direct substitutes depending on cartridge and bullet weight. Both can still be found as new powder (not pull down).

If using in 50bmg, VV 20N29 is an excellent powder choice as case volume will be exceeded long before even minor pressure issues are realized - even tapping the case, using a drop funnel and/or vibrating the case to maximize volume. VV 24N41 is faster than 20N29 and a better choice for lighter bullets. Both powders are a bit on the pricey side though. Both powders would substitute for H870.

H50bmg is a nice clean burning powder that is slightly faster than H870 (the lot that I have). I am not a fan of US869 in 50bmg or 338LM as I find it to be a dirty powder, although it can be pushed for max velocities in both cartridges.

Looking to work up 160gr RN Hornady in .264. I know there are a number of alternatives but a buddy has some for his .264 and gets excellent results. Again I realize there are other alternatives but I was curious to see what suggestions some of you had.
I was leaninmg towards the US869 myself.

H-870 was a surplus ball powder and was fairly cheap, US869 is almost identical and not so cheap do the math, then get the vasoline....Would not at all suprise me if they where the same powder...

I have used US869 and H870 in my 264 win mag. The H870 would get 150+fps with the same amount of powder. So they are not the same powder. I have found WC872 to be a powder more suitable with the 140gr's. PM me for more info
