I am extremely interested in acquiring a plain, light, short stainless synthetic left handed rifle in 308 however I haven't come across much that fits the bill. I still might be able to track down a t3 light and am thinking about getting the local smith to cut the barrel down to make it compact.

Great idea. I have a .308 compact model with a 20" bbl. It's very light, agile and accurate. If you find a good deal, I wouldn't hesitate to bob one down below 20". Nip a bit off the stock too.

Have a look at a Ruger Compact all weather, They have a left hand version
I have a Compact blued right hand version in 243 and is nice and light.
EPPS has one listed in 7mm-08.

Do an experiment for us , cut it down to 21" with a hack saw , use a jig to cut it straight then ream a bevel in the crown with a drill or die grinder( piloted reamer if you can borrow one ) or thy with a flat cut (I had one that shot fine for hunting ) . See how it shoots for "free " then if you want you can still take it to a gunsmith to do properly if needed .
I'm thinking of this myself but - procrastination

you can cut and crown yourself, like he is saying, I would suggest taping your barrel and using two hose clamps before using the hacksaw method this way the cut will be started straight then remove the clamps the tape will protect the finish on the barrel from the cutting and sanding. sand with emery board, then use a rounded brass bit to crown. then the q-tip test to make sure there are no burrs in the recessed crown.

I have a lefty stainless t3 308. Imo it's light and compact enough as it is. I find tikkas to be a little slow velocity wise and the couple extra inches sure help. If you do buy one , try it out for a while and then decide if 2" of extra barrel is obtrusive in any way. Have you looked at the battue? I think they make them in lefty.

T3's are all long action. After cutting it down to the minimum legal barrel length, it still won't be a truly compact rifle.

I like Tikka's, but I hate this long-action for everything approach. A compact rifle should have a compact action.

Wouldn't stop me from buying a Battue though.

In principle, I agree. In practice, their a damn good gun.

Now that they're 1100$ instead of 799$ thats a bit different.
